Biggest cause of sludge , at least with the old dino oil was oil not getting up to temp (short runs) and water building up in the oil from condensation .
Saw it many times back when I was a mechanic where the person just used the car for running around town would be full of sludge and the guy that was out on the hi-way a lot would be clean as a whistle .
Synthetic oils seem less prone to sludge but the engines in modern cars run hotter too .

Not exactly true Jake. Walmart sells Mobil 1 5W40 Turbo Diesel oil. Full synthetic.
I think you may be referring to semi-synthetic oil.
you want real syn run amsoil or belray engine oil
group IIII oil is the best you can buy. that and a franzen oil filter i had one on a truck years ago and oil never did darken or turn black.
modern OTR large diesel uses a oil centrifuge which is better its gets all the containments out.

yeah oil wont sludge by itself a plugged pcv valve or worse coolant leaking into the oil will cause. if you runs non detergent oil in a combustion engine you bet your ass it will sludge.

the only other way for it sludge these days if the moron runs 20,000 miles on regular oil.

all diesel oil sold on the shelf at Walmart or oreilly auto is not really synthetic its just hydro cracked group III oil its plain dino oil that is made to perform like syn oil. even if it says full synthetic on the bottle.
Not true

Exactly. Not true.
I personally wouldn't run Amsoil in my truck if it was given to me for free. Just my personal take on it. I have seen Amsoil get bad UOA's time after time.
Gotta do your homework Jake.

I feel like motor oil does wear out. Heavy diesels start using oil after a certain amount of hours on the new oil change. Change it again and no consumption. Just my observation. But it does go that way
It does. And that is why oil manufactures perform the NOACK volitility tets.

The oil itself doesn't wear out but it is effected by contaminants , it's the add pack that really breaks down allowing the contaminants to do their damage .

Contamination causes the base stock to break down over time. It happens.

i run 10,000 miles on supertech oil in my truck and i get no sludge.

And I'll bet most of that or a good portion is hi-way . Tough to wear an engine out running hi-way , it's the stop and go in the city that causes more wear and a lot of cold starts , short runs .

I'm running my car about 10K (16K km) on a oil change using a good synthetic and a hi mile oil filter designed for use with syn . I do it myself so I look everything over good while under there . Old habits die hard , I was an auto mechanic for years having mostly worked at Ford and GM dealerships and a couple independent :p
BTW , my 3.0 duratec V6 in my Ford five hundred has about 240 K km on it and it's as clean as can be , even with the longer runs the oil is a dark amber when changed .

I have been running Mobil 1 extended performance changed at 10k in my 2012 Toyota Tacoma since new.
I am going to switch to the new Mobil 1 annual performance and change at 20k at the next change with the filter changed out at 10k.
I'm running a 148 miles a day commute 14 days a month so the miles rack up quick.

Not going to argue Brian , you have your opinion and I have mine regardless of the info you posted . If you think I'm ignorant I don't care about that either , I've been around machinery big to small of all types most of my life and have drawn my own conclusions regardless of what so called experts say .

You need a bypass oil filter setup. Even more protection for longer drain intervals.

I'm not worried about it..mobil said it's good for a year and 20,ooo. That's good enough for me. Plus Toyota engines last along time.

I have been around machinery my whole career as well, have had classes on this stuff to boot. I don't have an opinion. I'm stating fact.

If you are changing your car and truck at 2500 miles and you are using full synthetic oil, you are wasting money. Should be good for 7500 before a change is needed. Do a UOA and have it checked. You'd be surprised.
Agree! I do 5k cuz it's easy to spot on the odo.

I've been considering sending my Ducati's erl for UOA. How much does it cost you?
