I am extra sensitive to smells that is one helpful tool when roasting our amazing coffee.

Its not unusual for semi synthetics to have a higher JASO rating in a line of oils from a blender just like the Stihl oils. If one judges an oil by smell & irritation to eyes & sinuses, run a quality mineral oil and the issue magically disappears.

For starters there are very few straight minerals oils left. Attributing strong smell to the base oil is flawed too. Often it's the diluent that smells. Back in the day when straight mineral oils were still widely in use some smelled plenty strong.

What mineral oils are left

Most everything I find is semi synthetic

Sent from my non internal combustion device.

So impress us. Take this up to 40:1 and how does she look? Or even 50:1 like a good FD oil suggests. But get out of the extremely safe zones of 32:1.

A boat oil can run at 32:1. All day long.

I like what I see but more carbon tells me more on the crown. Higher ratios will bring more carbon and less "washing." You have more HP left in the saw at this ratio. GO Red Bull!

I'll be trying Shaeffer's at 50:1 soon.

Saw is running rich.
I am using the same oil in my Lawnboy mower and it doesn't look like this at all.

Thank you, sir. Just started digging into it. Nice thread.

Kinda digging your muffler testing work on the 660 as well. This bit especially so:

this is what I think as well...

baffle in = you get the back pressure. but it holds in too much heat. Interesting thing is... unless you drill in that 1/2" hole where I have it. It's no where near as fast. I started at 1/4" hole and it got way faster and then solid, then I went to 1/2" and it got even faster yet. But only as a tri port. If you have only have the ported front cover and not that extra side port it's not good.

But if you take the baffle out, then I think you gotta get the back pressure from a solid/no port front cover. I kinda confirmed this for myself when I tried putting a opening/port on the 661 front cover...doesn't work out so well.

To me the bi port + solid/no port cover makes the most sense.

back pressure - from the solid/no port front cover

flow - equally placed and equally sized ports/holes. ...and you can go too big. 3/4-7/8" seems to be pretty nice.

screen size - the narrow weave seems to hold in too much heat as the 2nd cuts are always slower. The wide screens the cuts are much more consistent.

NOTE - I personally believe this back pressure thing is uber important only for the long bar. Seems if your doing short bar stuff you almost don't want a muffler at all... Don't quite understand it but these have been my observations.
