441 just locked up..... I think something bottom end came up through. Was cutting some some 18 inch cherry and all of a sudden she just quit. Chain was sharp as can be, good self feeding. Non ethanol fuel, and running GP7 at 32:1

A little pissed but it is what it is I guess. Tearing down in about 15 mins.

She would turn over then all of a sudden she locked solid. I don't think it is an oil issue, probably just luck of the draw.
That sucks. Shoulda used walmart oil. :)

Looking at the Sten's Full synthetic, I see petroleum under both "lubricating oil" and "distillates." That doesn't sound synthetic to me. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Sorry to hear that! What kinda oil is gp7?
Made by Torco

Well the good news is that the crank spins free, and the oil inside the saw did it's job lubricating for the past countless tanks. There is plenty of oil on the skirt and crank.

Pulled the muffler and noted that the top ring was gone out of it's groove.

The dowel pin on the rear of the piston has disappeared and it appears that the top ring snagged a couple of ports.

looked kind of like a cold seize but the saw was running for a good period of time. I wait till the fins are warm to start cutting. Have always done this with no problems in my other saws.

Gonna say that it caught a port.

Sounds like u may have just lost the piston pin? The Torco products r suppose to be really good? I hear the octane booster by Torco actually is one of the few that really works

I've never understood how a locating pin can come out in a running saw, think about it. The cylinder wall should keep a loose one in place. I hear of it happening though.

Very cool posting those msds sheets @PissRev ! I even see the Sten's Full synthetic I bought!
I just wish I knew what to look for... Been a while since I took chemistry...

You are welcome. Its been 23 years since I've taken chemistry myself but your Stens is made up of group 3 synthetic (hydrocracked) and polyisobutylene. It should be a great oil and not have the acrid smell that some ester base oils have.

What if the pin came loose and worked its way IN and the ring spun and caught a port?
