What octane is best, and why

Why, using in a race saw? Never had chainsaw spark knock or use at high altitude. Doesn’t it burn slower?

My experience is higher octane burns slower. I also live at higher elevation.

here for a long time the 100ll at the small airport was cheaper than the clear gas that is at the pump by more than a dollar a gallon so i used it too. but covid changed that. now i can get 87 clear gas for 5.50 and the 100ll is 6.29 and i think the 92 clear at most places is close to 6. its all just a bunch of crap gas is such a scam. it all shoukd only be 1.50

Personally, I stay away from Low Lead. Sure it’s low, but it’s airborne lead. The diesel fumes, chip mold and chipper dust are enough lung abuse.

i dont buy the avgas any more either because its price is now almost a dollar more than the 87 pure gas. the price has flipped.

at higher elevation wouldnt you want lower octane like 85 not to be confused with e85 but 85 octane gas

I usually run 87noE because it’s easy to find. Right now I’m running 91noE because it’s not winterized. Seems fine but I don’t see any gains from the 91. I usually work at 6000ish ft. At my house (9400) I feel like the saws run even fatter with the 91.

Burns fine for me…and clean. And most importantly lasts almost forever.

i have run saws with every kind of gas there is. i have never had an issue with fuel as long as its fresh. some shell gas toasted a bunch of saws at a place i was working in the 90s i dont remember why but it was something in the fuel. it took out four saws in three weeks. the saw shop asked us if we were using shell gas because another customer had a couple of burnt saws in the same week.

I've had the 110 LL bridge sparkplugs. I ran it for a bit back when they made non ethanol unavailable. In my experience it was a pita to tune saws properly as well so I gave up on it.

i forgot where i was going with that last post. its marginal in saws most of the time they run pretty good on any of the fuels. stihl backpack blower did not run worth a damn on 100ll no matter the carb settings

I have always found that using good oil with a slightly rich ratio and year round fuel stabilizer is most important for two strokes. Currently using VP synthetic at 40:1 with a full ounce of stabilizer per gallon and my machines really like it. Noticeably better running than that Stihl Ultra trash I tried last year because I got some for free.

Except it’s not a conspiracy, everything Rich Flagg tears down with Stihl Ultra “pond water” looks dryer than a popcorn fart. Way too many better oils to run than that crap. With the price of parts and labor most everything isn’t worth fixing to the average person, so new it is. @Czed

Ultra is known by most to be trash. It isn't a conspiracy, it's a real thing. There are some out there that think anything with the Stihl logo on it is the finest thing ever made. It just isn't true. For the record, I like many stihls.
