Wish we had more walnut in my area, need to go south or south east to get it.

Not a lot of walnut here either. Will they take if planted in your zone?
Yes they will grow in Minnesota. I've started several from nuts. Plant where you want them to be. Seems with that center tap root (on the variety that we have tried) had not transplanted to good for me.

My friend has been around grade Black Walnut All of his Life (83 yrs) and says walnut needs to have lots of Buck Brush around it to thrive. I believe him, We have a small grove (100 or so trees) 5 miles west of me that is mowed and in 55 years since it was planted never seen it knee high to a short person. It is now about 6" or 8 " Diameter at belly button high to a Taller Short Person. I probably drive by it a few hundred tines a year, once Seen it is too obvious to miss. I have been around sawmills all of my life and see a LOT of Walnut and The best of it is in mixed timber - Hackberry/Ash/Hickory/Elms/Cherry Not so much with White/soft Maple/Oaks and Cottonwood. But always has a lot of Bramble and Buck Brush around. I doesn't cut good grade if it is in an area where a lot livestock is it will get hollow on the majority of the Butt cuts.

only the 2x4s. Didn’t Have the mill when I started the framing.

I helped my father in law saw some wood today. he was pushing that mill so fast he made the blade stop and the belt slip.
It’s his mill so I didn’t know how to tell him, but the second time he made the belt slip I’m like hey you got to slow down….
