Years ago they sold a bar oil here in MI called Hy-Tac. It was red in color and very tacky. Never seen a bar oil before or since that was that tacky. Haven't seen it for sale in probably 15 years.

This oil works fine. Now here's the deal: If you are serious enough about cutting in extreme hot or cold conditions, you are also savvy enough to augment your equipment and supplies to get through the job. You guys that have floor mats on top of the floor mats that protect the carpet in your banged up firewood hauler can't be helped! Oil threads SUCK! This is about price $$$ Oil is down, get some before it goes back up. When oil goes through the roof, there will be threads asking if the Wife's hand lotion is a good substitute.

I used to run a mix of hyd oil and 80-90 gear oil when I didn't have any bar oil to use. Made a mess but it kept stuff oiled up. I also have tried 30wt and gear oil before. Nowadays I run the tsc stuff or tall timber all season bar oil since they are both priced way cheaper than the Stihl oil is here lately.

In the golden days of Arborist site there was a guy on the site by the name of Walt Galer who worked for Windsor. He claimed ATF or hydraulic oil where better chain lubricants than bar and chain oil.

View attachment 30334 View attachment 30335 This is the cheapest stuff I have available in my area. Seems to be the same as the husky branded stuff I usually get but $4 cheaper.

Brian, the only time I wore the bottom of the chain (and it did not cut straight) is when I had the chain too tight, my bad.

I used to use old motor oil, but found out that buying chain oil was cheaper than buying replacement bars.

Gypo started using it after Walt mentioned it. He was still in Ontario at that time.
If you do a search on AS I am sure you can find it. He went into detail why also IIRC.
