I finally had my SP125 & DE80 out last Sat.for their maiden runs.I've had the 125 since Feb.2019 & only in running condition for 1 yr.It's a very impressive saw.I was using the 125 to cut up a maple that's been dead for almost 10 yrs.,still solid inside.Had to come in from both sides due to the enormity of the tree.I couldn't finish due to the poor quality of the chain.I've got a new Sandvik .404 on it now just raring to go.
The DE80 on the other hand did not impress me at all.I used it to fell a good sized ash & I'd rather use the SP81 any day of the week for felling.I had to make the cut almost chest high & it was just too heavy for me.The power to weight ratio sucks,no other way to put it.Maybe OK for bucking.

Well guys I feel like I've been slacking with very few posts of late...between the surgery for my thumb, bouts of vertigo, working on non McCulloch saws, and trying to get parts sorted and put away I've been a bit busy. Mrs. H is having some issues as well so I need to spend a few more minutes a day arouind home.

Anyway, Turd Furgeson pointed this out to me...eBay BIN at a reasonable price, decent shipping charges, looked to be pretty clean so I pulled the trigger.

I spent an hour or two for some final cleaning but I think it is ready for the display.

I already have the Target and Stowe versions of the 795 based saws a never fueled 690, and a 390 as well as a couple of cut off attachments for the large frame saws like the 250. I have desired a 10 Series version for a while and now I have one.

I hope you and Mrs. Heimann shake what ails you both.

I know my "trigger thumb" took a good 2 months to get back to normal. Makes doing up buttons a challenge sometimes.

Just a question concerning Mac engined concrete saws .Did they use some sort of a governor or RPM limited coil to keep the speed low enough not to blow the wheels ?

The 795 power head was equipped with the air vane governor, the others did not have any kind of RPM limiting devices. The wheels were generally rated for 4,500 to 6,500 RPM and the belt drive ratio is about 1.5:1 so at 9,000 RPM engine speed the wheels would be turning 6,000.

I don't know what kind of safety factor they have built in to the wheels.

I suppose it would be determined by the wheel size .I think on say a 14" it's around 5,000-5,500 but on a 12" it should be a little higher .I don't think on a diamond / steel wheel for stone it would make much difference . I shudder to think about an abrasive steel cutter flying apart .Only running a stone wheel and never a rail cutter it does put a strain on the engine if you crowd it too much .With the big reed engine it could handle it but on a 10 series it would most likely drag it down some I would think .

Well it has taken a while but I think we finally have very good solution for 83598, the three piece sawdust screens used on the CP70L and early versions of the 7-10. There may be other saws that also used the three piece arrangement but I don't know of any. The CP70L and early 7-10's were dated 1970 and the concurrent 10-10 models were still RH start. I don't have any 71/72 10-10 IPL's to see if any show the three piece screens.

The original parts were produced flat, and needed to be arched to fit in the starter housing. My engineer friend has drawn these up with the correct arch so they print out in the correct shape and snap right in place. We also increased the thickness of the ribs at the top and bottom hold these more firmly in place. These are much sturdier than the originals like the one piece units I have been making.

I'll add some photos of the pieces as they come out of the printer and with the supports and the pieces by themselves ready to install.

Thanks Vinny. It took several attempts to get the geometry right but I think in the end it is a very good result. Now to find all those old 7-10 and CP70L owners and get them to buy new screens...

Here are photos of the part (83598) as it comes out of the printer, with the raft and supports removed, and an OEM piece.

The "hooks" on the OEM parts are pretty fragile. It is not uncommon to find them broken off even NOS parts these days.

20220605_154604.jpg

On the OEM ones, the hooks were needed to hold them in place while the starter cover was fitted to the flywheel housing, with the ribs on the top and bottom fitting into grooves in the housing and starter cover. The 3D printed parts have pretty substantial hooks, but they aren't really needed since the parts are made to the correct contour and the ribs are a bit taller so they are really locked in place.

Some of those style mufflers had a different deflector that you could rotate to direct the exhaust where you pleased. The piece you see would have been used to clamp that deflector in position. I don't have any electronic IPL's to pull an illustration but I think you can follow the description.

You also have a spark arrestor screen that was not commonly found with the SP105/125 mufflers.

Question for you guys. My 125 had all these parts in the muffler, but the ipl does not show the 2 pieces on the left. Can anyone explain?

Scott,

If you go to the last page on the IPL and look under "Accessories" the spark resting baffle is shown there which would be optional or a separate purchase. I'm guessing you have both the standard muffler system and the spark arrestor system there.

Anybody been in touch with Bob Johnson lately? I've been calling for 2 weeks during his normal answering hours and it goes straight to fax.
