Got the PM55 cleaned up.
Man, that thing was nasty!
Tank top lost ALL of the paint.
Stuffer/oil tank is cracked between the bar studs. Never seen that before. Guessing he pinched it and was attempting to pry it out?
Oh well, ive got another one.
Hope ive got a muffler. That one is completely rotted out.
Other than that, it should be a runner pretty soon.
Looks better than it did before anyway.

I've seen a few oil tanks cracked like that, I'm sure you are correct that they got the saw stuck and just kept trying to pry it out of the log.

This one was very different for me, someone actually use JB Weld to fix the oil pick up hose in place, as well as patch the tank.

Looking good....That looks like around 30 years of barn dust ;)... One of my favorite looking/performing Macs. I don't know what the difference was with the black texture paint compared to their yellow paint, but every PM55 I have seen seems to have had that cover paint flaking off..... They also seem to have a significant higher instance of rot in the tank as most of them I've seen didn't paint the inside of the tank.

I'm thinking the thick coating of bar oil that almost completely covered EVERYTHING may not have helped the paint either.😁
Lost most of the yellow too.
Touch of mag rot on the bottom of the recoil and the oil tank, but nothing too concerning.

So what you're saying is it doesn't matter if the saw had thin or thick rings as they're interchangeable.Since there's no way of dating a Mac saw by the serial #,it kinda hard to tell when it was made.

Yes, many will say that the thin rings perform better but the thick rings last longer.

After a year and a half of fighting my CP125 runs! I didn't get to test it since the clutch is slipping, but it finally runs! @heimannm was right, I just wasn't pulling it over hard enough last time. Helpful tip, you have to remember to manually close the decomp on saws with a DSP, otherwise it'll sound and run funny.....

I started putting bars & chains on 610s today. My 1st saw of choice was the Monkey Wards 3.7.While in the process of trying to take the chain brake off I noticed that the brake is locked up.I'll have a look at it tomorrow when I have more time.I have other brakes that style that I can just slap on,but the color scheme would clash - orange & black vs.yellow & black (barf).I'm not that well versed in the older flag style brake, buty I'm sure it's not that different than the newer one piece brake.
So,I moved on to a regular yellow & black 610 with the one pioece brake.Only a few more to go.

How readily available are parts for an SP60 (i.e.piston,rings,etc.)? I really don't hear much about these saws. Were they not a popular model?

I was talking about the other style brake with the plastic flag that goes from the brake all the way over to the fan housing & bolts on there.
This style that you brought up the IPL for I've worked on in the past & they're not that difficult.
Edit:Sorry,I didn't see the 2nd brake under the 1st one.The 2nd brake is the style I have to try to fix.

The PM60 and SP60 both use the same 1.870" bore piston, 87713. As "in between" saws they were not as common, most folks would either go the bargain route and choose a 10-10 or PM55, or step up to the SP70 or one of the 82cc models. The SP60's are fine saws, but they are not quite up there with the 70 or 82cc models.

I have several 87713 piston assemblies on hand if you decide to undertake that project.

They run great, I have a pair of them and new pistons and rings for them if they ever start to go weak. Good Chance Max has NOS pistons for those. Mark Might as well... Pretty sure I got mine from Bob before he sold.

I'm looking at an SP60 now,but not too happy with the shipping rates of $62.I usually see these saws gor in excess of $200.I've contacted the seller & waiting to hear back.

I got the "parts" Timber Bear today & found it to be in great shape except for the partially destroyed recoil.I took the recoil off & found out why the rope was hanging out - the metal pulley was in pieces & the spring came flying out.I had another recoil that I put on to check to see how the compression was & it was really good.I then took the plug out & put in some fuel to see if it'd fire.Sure enough it fired.I figured I'd put some fuel in the tank & give it a whirl. After priming the carb it took off running. The needles were set spot on & it throttled up & idled beautifully.I'll go through it more tomorrow & see about putting a bar & chain on it.This saw was pretty much a freebie.

There are probably some MTD saws that are the same but I don't have any specific model numbers.

I dug intop tyhe Timber Bear i bit more today.I pulled the fan housing off to try to get a broken screw out.Someone had put the wrong screws in to hold the recoil on & must've used a drill/driver to do it & ended up breaking one of the screws off that holds the recoil on to the fan housing.I gave up on it after a while & even had my son try to help me.Three screws will have to be enough.
The chain brake was loaded with crud,so I cleaned that up,then I put what I think is an 18 in.bar & chain on it.It runs great & oils well too.

Something I've noticed on the 600 series mufflers is that people tear the screens off.Could someone explain why folks do that? Do the screens restrict the exhaust somehow? I know that if you're cutting on federal lands & some state lands too, those spark arrestor screens must be on the saw or you're not allowed to cut.
