I finally got the long awaited PM55 today.Everything on the saw WAS seized - recoil ( needs to have the pulley replaced),engine, manual oiler,& choke. There was no plug in the engine which most likely contributed to the engine being seized.I sprayed some Deep creep in the plug hole & let it do it's magic while I fiddled with the recoil.Lots of white death on the screws & the pulley, the pulley is shot.A lot of folks would've just thrown the recoil spring right out in the trash, but I'm gonna try to save it.The spindle wouldn't even turn after I pulled the pulley off.Surprisingly the plastic bushing is still good. The coil wire is gone,so I've gotta either make a new one,or use a new one I have on hand.
I got the choke to work freely with Deep Creep & a bit of light hammering. After I was done cleaning up the recoil housing I put a breaker bart & socket on the flywheel nut to see if it'd break loose. The Deep Creep did it's job,I could've turned it over with a ratchet. It seems to have decent compression, but hard to tell when turning it over with a ratchet. The manual oiler is freed up,but not pumping any oiol.I'll have to take both oilers off & go through them,my guess is check valve issues.
This saw has been sitting for many yrs.in a not so friendly environment.I hope to bring it back to it's former glory & give it to my son.
One good thing is the fuel tank is in great shape. Here's a pic of the recoil pulley.

Ive seen this project for a few days now...curious if it runs or is just together now?
Both! And, neither. It ran for awhile before suddenly running out of fuel (low tank, bad filter, poor tune or a combination of the above), and I'm waiting on a few clutch things to show up in my mail box before it's 100% complete.

I don't know if you've priced Macs lately, but they're getting out of hand.I picked up a PM55 back last winter for around $150 & it needed a bit of work, but nothing like this one.Gone arer the days of picking up a Mac for $20-$40!
Now I'm stuck trying to find a rewind drum/pulley for it.EBay is all out (I refuse to pay $35 for one).I'm waiting on Mark H.to reply to my parts request.

I know they have been getting stupid in my opinion. That's why I really have quit buying them. A lot of money to just sit on a shelf for me. I may just list the only two macs I have left to pay off my house! :D

Boy thats for sure guys. Its a sellers market for sure. Pretty rare to find an ebay or facebook mcculloch that isnt a few hundred dollars. However, people are still buying. Demand is still up for the ol gals so i cant blame a seller. Especially when an auction starts at 1 dollar and ends at a 1000.00. I paid 425.00 several yrs ago for a sp105, todays world its double or more for that saw. Same with 125. Guys want them.

If you get right down to it the prices are down right ridiculous on just about everything especially chainsaws no matter what brand .Doesn't seem to matter if they run or not .According to that I have $25 grand in my shed an half a mil . in my shop BTW I don't .

Prices are crazy. I did just get a good deal on a non mac saw. 100 bucks for a nearly new echo 490. I bet its had less than 3 tanks thru it. Runs and cuts like new. Not bad. Used it today to clear a few fallen trees. It did great.

You guys probably aren't going to believe this, but I managed to save the recoil drum on the PM55.I took a screwdriver & scraped off all the "material" that had accumulated on the bottom side. Then I took a bastard file to the drum & filed it nice & smooth. With the spring I scraped off the worst of the corrosion, then sanderd it smooth.I put it back together & it works great!
I pulled the carb off too figuring it needed a rebuild. The pump side was in great condition & nothing in the inlet screen.I went on to the metering side thinking it'd be the culprit,it was,but not in the way I thought.Someone had rebuilt the carb & put the diaphragm & gasket on in the wrong order. This is probably why the saw sat for so long & no one wanted to mess with it.
The next thing on the list is to pull the tank handle & the oilers to see what's going on with the no oiling situation.
BTW,from what I could see of the piston,it looked to have some minor scoring & the cylinder looks good too.

You can't compare yesterdays prices to todays prices. It doesn't work. Back when i started collecting saws
i could buy SP125 for 200 bucks, Sachs Dolmar 166's for 300 bucks and the list goe's on. Muscle saws are
demanding a premium especially the Mac SP125's. Seems everyone has to have one and Mac made millions
of them. The easiest muscle saw to find.

It boils down to everything from the price of gas, home heating oil, a gallon of milk. I bought a 3/4 drive
Ingersoll Rand impact gun a few years ago for just over 300 bucks. I blew it up the other day, It gets used
a lot. I priced a new one and it is over 600 bucks.

I've told this story a lot but when I was in high school in the late 80's, nobody wanted big saws, especially old ones.

090s and 125s would sit in pawn shops for $150-200 until they'd accumulated a thick layer of dust and finally someone
offered $75. You could find muscle saws in dumpsters where I lived. I found a complete 7-10 Automatic in the dumpster
behind a Napa. But it's that way with everything - classic muscle cars were cheap, nobody wanted old motorcycles either.

You are 100% correct Jacob, I remember you could buy a muscle car for damn near pennies
especially during the 1973 1974 gas crunch. If we had known we could be rich.

A majority of mine were bought cheaply but that was years ago .It was like 90 bucks plus the ride for the 2100 CD Husky and 125 for the "black beauty " 125 Mac from northern California. If I recall the Homelite 2100S was around 125 .I've got around 4-450 in the two Partner P-100's with everything I put into them but they were junk when I bought them ,lots of work on those two .Most of the small displacement Macs, like a 700 and the 10-10's were freebies . One of my MS 200T's was sent to me from Adam Clark in Cali .The other I bought from a dealer where they thought it blew a rod ,20 bucks .It didn't BTW . I've got enough dead ones it's doubtful unless I live to 100 I ever get them all running .

Would anyone happen to have any side straps and tie straps for the old J type 13/16" pitch chain used on the 2 man saws? I've looked through the literature I have and cant find part numbers either. I've got a 7-55 that I'll be showing soon and ive got one link in the chain that needs to be replaced.

Talk about prices .I was getting good old "Ollie " ( Oliver OC 6 bulldozer ) ready for the tug on the cottonwood . Ollie is almost 70 years old and drools a little bit like hydraulic oil and gear lube for the final drives . 5 gallons of hydraulic oil and two of 85/90 WT gear oil $96 .Good grief !

I don't know if anyone here is aware of the McCulloch parts that were owned by Bob Johnson have found a new owner.Max Rowe of Virginia bought the whole kit 'n kaboodle from Bob recently. He'll be doing an inventory & unloading the pod when it comes in later this week.Let's hope we can deal with Max as well as we were able to deal with Bob.

I finally got to look at the 1010A that was acquired earlier in the summer. Most of the saw looks pretty good, with the exception of the overly opened up muffler(IMO). The piston and cylinder seem to be in very good shape.

The version of muffler that I'd like to replace it with is the one with the louvered vents similar to this picture. ( I think the p/n: is 600002).
Does anyone know where one could be found???

The 3 longer screws that hold the starter cover on could be replaced as well, also on my list to acquire.
