Mac's are kinda funny that way. The 740 - 797's have them as do the big frame gear drives. And some of the earlier "10" series saws do as well. If you like, you can install a starter on the other side as,well, and have two. Though I'm not sure why you would want this.
Interesting info!

Just a heads up to my MAC friends here, I drilled a 1/4" hole in a perfectly good PM800. I got a plug from Ace Hardware to fill it. Will let that simmer until my Fastenal shipment arrives tomorrow, then I'll give you a peek at my latest "improvement".

Very nice! I've never seen the recoil on the clutch side of a saw before... Very cool!

10-10's don't get any plainer than this.

I've been working on a few this week, Super 2-10 from Eccentric is now a runner after a bit of work, the 1-80 from Ike Holt now starts and runs well, and Super LG-6 is almost ready. I also had a chance to run my mini dozer for a while yesterday and the S2-10 and the CP 70L (also from Ike Holt) today; everything worked great.

Hoping we can work around the rain and still enjoy the GTG on Saturday, should have some different saws to run.

Next time try McMaster Carr, faster than Jimmy Johns.

No local McMaster. No shipping charge with Fastenal.

Anyway Fastenal came through today! Before you get all excited unnecessarily, this modification is not a performance modification. It is a McAggravation modification.

The hole. The hole plugged.

Those familiar with Mac lore and Mac mysteries (or AV Macs) are all aware of the unobtainable and indescribable part number 83811 - known only in the IPLs as “Screw – Special”. Among its attributes is the fact that it is a royal pain to slowly remove it a fraction of a turn at a time. To ignore it and remove/install the rear A/V mount from the top risks bending the oiler rod and/or breaking the oil button and fits of rage when you realize you must disassemble the saw again for some reason. The 1/4” hole allows easy access to the “wait for three days” Fastenal replacement screw. This makes disassembly and assembly so much easier. You could drill a smaller hole to accommodate a 5/32” Allen wrench but I chose the 1/4” to give me more wiggle room and because that was the smallest diameter hole plug that Ace Hardware had.

The “Screw – Special”. The replacement screw.

The Wrench in place. The Saw.

Now on those damned screws,Macs and Stihls alike ,if it is a slotted head I replace them with either a torx head or a socket head .I'm more for fuctionality than originality .

There are only three slotted screws left on that particular saw not counting the carb and the slotted hex head holding the oiler: The handle screw (Mac did use some Allen heads but they are hard to come by), the oil tank screw and the chain adjuster (Allen heads on the last two pack tight with oily saw dust and become a bigger nuisance than a slotted screw). Everything else on the saw, including the crankcase screws have been replaced with socket or button head screws - makes life easier.

If you're stuck with slotted screws, a set of gunsmith screwdrivers helps a lot.

I don't order much, but this is the first time I didn't get it next business day at Fastenal. If I had to pay shipping, the shipping charge would likely be higher than the price of the odd ball stuff not stocked at the store. The Special Screw is a 12/24 which is why you have to order them. Ron

Very clever adaptation there Ron.

On older saws where the rubber is soft it is easy enough to slip the mounts out, but with new, stiff mounts I will often punch the roll pin out and remove the choke button to make assembly easier.

My AVs are all old and busted. Real stiff when you screw them together. Ron

Super 250 with the chrome full wrap, H&S spike, long roller nose bar, and custom muffler, gotta love it.

Since to mentioned it I ran into the same thing on the holes you put a puller on to pull a 125 flywheel .I found them at work,we have a zillion different bolts .After I managed to get the thing off I tapped them out to 1/4"- 20 .

Go figure .I have another 125 plus a 105 and they had 1/4" 20 .I wonder why this one had 12-24 ?
