It's quite unbelievable today how McCulloch was once practically the NASA of small engine technology.
Yes, he was a motivated mechanical genius! And he married a Briggs, from Briggs and Stratton, and had and in-law who owned Evinrude! So motors and money were in the family! I wonder were they would be today if he kept developing!!

I found out at the PNW gtg that big saws & big wood & long bars need aggressive teeth. Stock raker height .404 chisel would not clear chips adequately on my 797g with 72" bar. The same thing happened with my 895 and 60" bar last year. Anyone trying this should run 1/2, preferably chisel, or rakers way down on .404.

Chainsaw Jim spent some time going over the carburetor on my kart saw during the PNW GTG last weekend and got it running. I was able to make a couple of cuts before the fuel tank vibrated loose causing it to run out of fuel.

It will need a little more work but I am hopeful now that I will be able to make it run somewhat reliably.

File photo of me with the saw.

Thanks again to Jim for his persistence.

What would be the better saw for a newbie to old saws a 10-10 or a 200?
These 2 are for sale locally.
The 200 allegedly ran last year and "just needs the carb cleaned".
The seller makes no claims about the 10-10
Would either of these have a decompression valve for easier starting?
Thanks!

You would get more practical (and useful) experience working on the 10-10 in my personal opinion. Lots of parts available and plenty of folks to assist with any hurdles you may encounter. And they make a great firewood saw. The 200 would be more of a pure nostalgia saw or collectible even if it runs well. Not many guys would grab one over a 10-10 for cutting firewood if they had a choice.

That said, I'd still probably buy em both. LOL

The story goes Bob McCulloch lost a fortune trying to get into the marine outboard motor industry before dying a few years later.

Here's a happier story. Yesterday my brother Dennis got his McCulloch 125 Kart saw running, for the first time in 30 years.
It's a "Bob Walkerized" built saw from the 1980's.
The flywheel keyway was gone, reason why it sat on the shelf for this long. Last week I gave Dennis a can of valve grinding compound and he successfully lapped the crank stub and flywheel together.

She rips in the 16K rpm range. Its got either a 34 or 36mm Tillotson HR snowmobile carb, balanced and welded crank and the pipe has a inverted stinger inside.
He's 71 now and I don't think he has plans to race again so it might be going up for sale.
Last pic is Dennis running it 30 yrs ago in 1989.
