I just found this buried among my Mac documentation and it seems to confirm the 12K top end for the 82cc saws..., at least for the PM8200 in what appears to be the 'representative' of the 82cc class. Other good info included as well, though many, many saws are missing from the list. If anyone has any supplemental info (additional pages perhaps) it would be very cool to get it consolidated into a single PDF for future reference and distribution.

Any comments, Al? This is the one I got down by you a few years back. Sure don't want to burn it up, but sure don't want to leave all that extra 82cc Mac just sitting on a shelf, either. I'm lovin' this thing now.
I never tached one so I have no idea how fast is too fast .I just tune by ear and call it a day .Might add although I've tweaked a few 10 series the 82 cc models I never figured needed it .I do have another in a box needing a piston which I might enhance or I might not

This whole thing about tuning for max RPM's is kind of a bone of contention too .I know a lot of saw racers and I don't know a one of them who strictly goes by tach readings .--just saying--

I remember on the pre EPA saws, we never used a tach much. Just set them by ear where they ran best. Even today, you'll find saws that won't run right at the listed rpm. Either have to set it too lean to get it that fast, or slow it down till it's way too rich. Max rpm is more of a guideline than an absolute rule.

I have added a couple of unusual McCulloch saws to my collection recently.

Pro Mac 165 from e-Bay was missing some parts.

The AF cover was easy, I picked up this clutch cover a few years ago off e-Bay knowing that one day it would come in handy.

The clutch cover had some light use, the saw has never been fueled and I will likely keep it that way.

The other recent addition is the XM40 which I take to be a "McCulloch" response to green and purple Wildthings. I don't know for sure but I believe this may have been a product of Husqvarna?

I am certain the bar adjust screw is not supposed to poke through the brake band and drag on the clutch drum...

I found a piece of keystock that fit the clutch cover nicely, drilled a blind hole to act as a stop for the screw, and voila, it works.

Tuning for max rpm's doesn't necessarily depend on a tach anyway. And there's no reason for a modded or race saw to be tuned with a tach either. Why would you? And compare the results to what?

In my way of lookin' at it, a tach is a valuable tool for quickly conforming to or verifying factory recommended specs on stock saws (or other established baseline) and is clearly a valuable learning aid for folks who are just getting their feet wet tuning by ear. Helps em see what they're hearin' and how close or far off to a given baseline they are as they get more experienced tuning by ear.

'Course most guys use a tach just to show off the gains they've realized by their modifications (or to justify all that cash they spent having someone else do the mods for em) which is all relative to the factory stock specs and simply represents the difference between stock and modded..., but could be used to reference a new baseline to adhere to (or reference) after initial mods if additional tweaking or new mods are added to the mix.

A tach also comes in handy for showing a customer that their newly rebuilt saw is re-tuned to factory spec when you hand it back to em after they blew it up from tuning it by ear.

FWIW these are a McCulloch 640, 87 cc saw with the Mac carburetor. I could get more RPM but it doesn't like to cut so well when it's screaming it guts out like that.

Those tractors were imported by Kubota. Kubota had restrictions on importing their tractors and was using the McCulloch name to be able to get them in the country. Pretty cool stuff. There was one that showed up about two hours from me for $500 that I thought about buying but left it alone.

32/33” McCulloch.

It does just fine.

I’ve got a 28” but I haven’t ran it on this saw.
