My grandfather raised meat cattle on the 300 acres, but the land was changed over to cornfields after his death. He died when my mother was a teenager and by the time I came into existence the only remains of the cattle operation were empty barns and sheds.

My grandfather on my dad's side was a farmer. When I was just a baby, he sold the farm. Bought a little house and retired. He passed away when i was 10 or so.

Been using one for several years. Push on with tractor and take it where you need it and then dump. If you want to spend some coin they now have them that will load without a tractor.

Yep, Several of the farmers around here have them. I have a picture here some where using one last year. They work real good if only using one tractor.

Does anyone use Talcum powder for seed planting?
IF so, how much does it resemble what they took out of baby powder?

On a humid day, this corn starch crap is like throwing a box of baking flour in your boots or wherever else ya might put it.

The talc we used this spring was gray & about the same consistency as baby powder. On a windy day you end up eating it no matter where you stand or how you try to put it on. We normally we use graphite, about a tablespoon per box or 1-1/2 bushel.

There’s more money in straw bales right now that the wheat you cut off the acres...

We try to get 4000 bales a year put up.. give or take.
What is driving up the straw cost? I had to buy 25 bales for bedding last fall at $7/bale. I'm hoping to stock up on mulch hay this year since it usually comes in at less than $5/bale.

An unwillingness of people to get the *s-word put up in a barn manually...

Are you saying labor costs are pushing the prices up? Or are farmers trying to unload the bales rather than keep them? I'm about to try and secure 12+ round bales to feed my alpacas for the next 12+ months. Two more geldings are joining the herd this weekend. We just processed three young roosters this morning. We tried something different this time; I skinned the roosters and am trying to preserve the hides to sell later. There's a market for the saddle and hackle feathers for fly fishing lures. I've seen hen pelts sell for $20-30, and that would more than pay for the feed (and headaches) for each rooster.

Putting up square bales is rather hard and uncomfortable work.
There is not a line of local teenagers around the block to assist in the endeavor, so if ya want to put up a few thousand bales, best plan on doing it yourself.
We normally sell it to landscapers, road crews, gardeners, and a few to people who use it for bedding livestock.

We use an accumulator grapple on the front of the skid steer to load. Not the fastest, but 1 person can do it all day.
And not die..
But still have to unload the old fashioned way.

I can't imagine how many bales I bucked at $.10 a bale. When my boys did it, it was $.25 a bale.
Kids now won't even talk to you about throwing bales, they say it's too hot and nasty to mess with.
They'd rather play video games and complain about being broke.
