I'm hoping for a few dry days Charlie, then it's on..

Yeah....no good once they get too stiff.
It still makes good feed with a little grain in it. My weather often doesn’t cooperate so I end up baling with heads and doughy grain. Obviously it’s best in the boot stage. But it’s still good later. I’ve been raising beef forever. Never had any of the horror stories I’ve read about

Thanks for that Jake.

I'm still pretty new to this whole farming thing. I'll be looking for an opportunity to get this stuff baled.....but I'm not gonna lose any sleep. When these fields were sown, it was supposed to be pasture grass and clover. Last year there was wheat that went way late on it. Now.....I'm not sure if they sowed wheat, fescue, and clover, or if this wheat come up from the seed that was dropped last year. Either way......it's mine now, so I'll make the best of it.

I’m sure you’ve seen my posts on some soy straw to get the girls through. I’ve baled barley late enough that the straw was beginning to yellow out. The grain in the heads still kept the girls looking nice all winter. I wouldn’t loose much sleep either. I have wheat ready to cut myself for hay. Just haven’t had the weather to pull the trigger

Terrible timing. Thankfully, I was able to find a replacement bull. I’ve always wanted a Murray Grey bull, and this guy seems to be a good fit. He is fitting right in, and has great temperament so far.

Beautiful bull !!!!
Yes sir he's a dandy!
Thank you. It was pretty unfortunate about or other bull. He was real gentle and easy on fences. But he is not usable now. We will at least get hamburger out of him, or auction him, but with the prices right now, I think we might be better off butchering him. I think this new bull crossed with the Angus and SimAngus cows will be great. I couldn’t ask for a nicer bull, especially given the time-frame.

My personal experience is honestly I don’t like the silage hay. Only reason I dislike them is the cows tend to get obsessed and want to eat too much haylage or whatever you call those bales. The only time I’ve used one is if I had no choice but to bake green hay. Also baking the hay wet is hard on the baler. I always try to bale good dry product. Nothing wrong with a bale wrapper. Some people love them. Occasionally birds pick holes in the plastic wrap then the bales rot In my opinion for beef cattle they become a nuisance.

This post is exactly the sort of informed info I was hoping for. I've got all this wheat that I'm afraid I can't get dry enough. But.....I'm gonna try to be patient.

Thanks

Wait for it boss man. I’m waiting too. I’ve got a good 100 bales out there. Just waiting. I’d pass on the bale wrapper. My buddy wraps all his just to store them outside. I bake mine and butt them all up to store outside as well. Waste is minimal with net.

So.....bale wrappers. The 3 point hitch type. Anyone have any experience with em?

Not familiar with them either, however as Jake mentioned for seasoned hay, oats, corn stalks, 99% of this was left uncovered. Just put in rows with bales butted up to each other. In west central Illinois, I think most farmers on tight enough budget and didn't see much difference with product versus time and money invested. Also, the guys that I custom hay baled for knew what they wanted for winter bale numbers and if they had extra over that...it would be sold. Most never had anything to old that they would be feeding then either.
