That’s cool! Thanks for sharing
In a chainsaw, it seems like you’d want the crankcase side of the bearings to be exposed to fuel/oil mix to get lubrication under hard loads running hot. Seems like they would be getting less with that side closed off?
Thanks JJ, makes sense to me. Very interesting info!I think the idea was to keep debris out of the bearings. Even though they're shielded bearings, some lubrication from the fuel mix would "burp through."
Actually the opposite happened though in terms of debris - fine sawdust would make its' way in there and the bearings would get packed tight with it and fail.
There were a lot of debris-related bottom end failures early on and Stihl's engineers finally figured out that it was an air filtration issue.

HMMMMM stainless dawgs ...... either way they look clean ......
I am thinking an OEM one is in the neighborhood of $150.
Are they any different than the 046 poly?Just FYI if your still looking. Two poly flywheels just posted on eBay. Both have coils with... $60-65

I believe so but not entirely sure? I think the inside diameter of the 046 flywheel is smaller like a 064 and metal flywheel 066. The Poly has a larger inside bore.
A 046 poly flywheel on a 064 would be cool...

This was a result of jms and other *pretty boy “builders” saying the bearings were different. The bearings are the same size and configuration throughout the series (064, 066, MS-650, MS-660). The part number for the PTO side bearing has changed because
they changed the design of the cage a couple times. Somehow, word got out on AS that the poly flywheel saws use larger bearings and that's not the case. It's the flywheel
side oil seal that's larger.
ChainsawJim did one as well.@Willard has tired it on a short case 066. I was going to try a arctic 046 flywheel on a 064 because I couldn’t find a arctic 064 flywheel for my build. Willard said it’s a PITA to get the dogs to line up for the rewind. It would be pretty cool though

Hey guys I'd like to help you out here with the 064-066/046 conversion, but it's been so long ago. I'd have to see if I got some of my notes in the rewind spool mounting mod. I have since sold the 046 parts.
My family and I are presently in Charleston, South Carolina.
Beautiful 85°F here today. We really love this place. Great people, great food and lots to see here. Could easily retire here if I could.
