So we've been without a store manager for going on 5 weeks since our last manager quit, and *s-word isn't getting done and we have no one to go to for problems. I left work pissed off on Friday last week and decided to write an email to our district manager (DM) about a few of the issues we've been having. Asked him who is supposed to be doing our manager duties in the meantime. Mentioned that I will be working strictly within my available hours from now on. Told him no one has been out to clean the sewage in the parking lot from when the toilets overflowed, and it's still flowing out, and I told him with it being dark at 5pm, I'm not following customers out to their cars in our unlit parking lot to change batteries and pull check engine codes at night. Our store is 1/2 a mile outside the city limits, and our clientele at 9pm usually isn't soccer moms and little old ladies.

So today Mr. District Manager stops by the store to meet with me and spewed a bunch of typical middle manager BS. He said our acting manager is a manager from another store but nobody except for the DM himself was aware of this.

He said he can't do anything about the sewer mess in the parking lot because the building is leased. I told him stop paying the *f-wording rent. He says "Oh well we can't just do that." At first he pretended he couldn't smell it... I told him I've been sick with a cold and I can't smell anything and I can smell that sewer, don't tell me you can't smell it.

And he told me I have to install batteries even if it is dark out "because the sign on the door says we offer that service". I told him take down the sign. He said we can't do that. I told him you can fire me over this, and then he dropped the issue realizing he can't lose any more people.

Basically Mr. DM accomplished nothing except to check off his list that he responded to me. Didn't address a single concern. Complete tool. I don't know how much money makes, but if it's more than minimum wage, it's too much.

I know you are pissed but in business every employee is replicable.
Sure, with enough time. But do you really want to lose a reliable employee out of your already understaffed store? We don't get lots of applicants. Jobs go weeks, if not months without being filled. And when they get filled, they aren't always filled with the most knowledgeable reliable, people.

And just like people are replaceable, so are jobs. I have no attachment to this place and I wasn't bluffing.

You've answered your own question, its time to move on. Crappy employers don't suddenly become good ones, and your life is too short and valuable to waste on a place like this. First thing I would do is call city or county codes enforcement tomorrow morning, I'm sure they will be thrilled to learn about sewage in the parking lot. Nothing gets repairs done faster than a suspended permit to operate.

The job market is not as lucrative as some think.

Advance Auto, but yeah, big yellow/red parts store. They are closing 700+ stores in the first half of 2025, and I think it's a general sign of the direction of this company. I actually did call the sewer authority who came out to make sure it wasn't their lines, and they've been checking in, but this is going on now 3 weeks?, not fully repaired. They'll be the ones who get the health department involved.

This job is not a career for me, its just a way to cover some bills while I get through college, but that doesn't mean I want to work in a *s-wordshow every day.

Bill, gonna have to beg to differ on that. Maybe for some jobs that require actual qualifications, but this is a bottom-of-the-barrel retail job that pays less than I've made at any other job I've ever worked. It's pretty easily replaced.

Maybe it’s regional, but there are signs up all over with job openings. Everyone seems to be hiring.
I am sure there are for burger flippers but I doubt for skilled labor.

Never burn a bridge when you leave that you may need to cross in the future.

You need to get off the farm bud, skilled labor jobs are in demand as well.

Not burning a bridge is solid advice. I only burned 2 in my life, and given the chance, I’d do them both again.

Can you get a job as an apprentice in the line of work you are going to college for?

#1 My name is Bill
#2 Bud was my uncle
I believe @JoeDirt is a college kid working at a auto parts store.
I know a "bit" about skilled labor.
I taught trades education for years
Yes skilled labor is in demand but anyone who gets his/her panties in wad thinking they are irreplaceable is indeed replaceable.
They will quickly find out.

As I said.....
Some are more easily replaced than others. Some are damn difficult to replace. Some competitors would be very happy to grab the guy you get rid of that has all the training and certification's. So use a narrower brush.

I do agree on the bridge thing though.
