I was on a vicious dog call. A Rottweiler was going bazerk biting everyone. An officer fired a whole mag of 13 rounds into dog at close range. Hit dog 9 times in chest. Dog ran away.
Three hours later, dog owner came home and reported his dog shot. Dog was still walking and barking. Lol
.40 cal stopping power at its best.
Some new 9mm rounds show really good ballistics.

The testing is lacking one parameter ... a new wave of wimps that can not tolerate any recoil!

Go back and look at the testing that resulted in the 10 mm. Very good round, but too stout for most. However, that FBI testing was done as a result of the failure of the 9mm to stop bad guys before the bad guys killed law enforcement.

Also, now they are allowing HP ammo, which makes a big difference.

My Dad was a big fan of the 45 ACP after WW II. When I asked him why one day (the Germans mostly had 9 mm) he said because "you can hit a guy in the hand and knock him down". A 9 mm will not do that.

Also, years ago, NYS Police went from the 38 (ballistically the same as the 9 mm) to the 357 Mag. The reason, 38s were bouncing off car windshields instead of penetrating them. Nothing they have done to the 9 mm has changed that.

I remember an incident where the police knew a criminal was arriving by train, and the set up to arrest him. Instead there was a shoot out. He was hit 16 times, and recovering in the hospital.

I have been following this debate for a long time, you can keep the 9 mm, I'll take the 40.

Good thing he was not using a 9, dog would have bit him!

Gotta be open minded Mike. Lol
10mm was just to long of a round to fit in a hand gun for the majority of officers. Recoil was very stout! Makes a super great carbine or Machine gun round.
S&W .357 ACP is a very nice round but too expensive. .40 cal case necked down to 9mm bullet. Excellent stopping power.
Shot placement is paramount with any caliber weapon.

I almost hate adding to this in this tread...

Ammo is huge factor.
While I have 380's, 38's, 357's, 9mm, 45, and 10mm, depending on what I am carrying will depend on the round.
I can guarantee the one on my side at any given moment will be a hollow point and possibly a Quality Protection round.

If you are going to switch to a "Protection Round", buy some 20 round boxes and shoot more than 1 clip of each. You must make sure the ammo loads properly from round to round.
After that I test for Stopping power... Might sound stupid but shooting into 3/4 wall board and plywood gives you a real goo idea of what that round is or is not capable of.

.
That was my initial thought as well...but then I realized that my progressive liberal friends and I, need choices , like where to pee and what sex to be that day, and what shade of pink my service piece should be ...of course I would not want to have a sore wrist after a busy day qualifying at the range. And I really hate my mani-pedi after a day's worth of .45

Jeff, I did not know, but ditto what Randy said!

My Step Son, the neighbor on the Right, and the one on the Left are all cops. My Step Son is NYPD in the 44th (Yankee Stadium), likely the busiest precinct in the City. It is hard to imagine what goes on there on a regular basis.

Their stories are funny, and can scare you. Nothing worse than responding to a domestic! My neighbor responds to a domestic, and sees a guy beating the life out of a woman. He grabs the guy, pulls him off, and throws him down in another corner. The woman grabs a baseball bat and hits my neighbor over the back of the head with it!!! You can't make this stuff up!

and thats why in my city thr domestic units roll two deep in the squad car. You see them all the time unfortunately.

^^^This. A 9mm, 10mm, .45, or .22 in the forehead or the heart will do the trick. I had a friend get shot between the eyes and killed with a .25 caliber.

Modern 9mm ammo is TOTALLY sufficient for stopping a threat.

Yup 147gr +p federal hst is just within a few mm of the 230g .45 hst and in most guns you can carry double the rounds of a .45 and control it much better. Saying that though I still carry a .45 right now.
Edit : +p+ 9mm rounds are very close to .357 sig power but unless you have a fully supported barrel (not glock) you risk case rupture and there is no standard for +p+ so who knows what the pressure will truely be. And you beat your gun to death.
