No id tag?
Does it say 'Rancher' under the 55 on the recoil or 'air injection'?
Decomp?
Spur or rim?
3/8 or .325?
3/8 no tag rim drive part of the decal is missing has a decomp.

Decomp likely means it's the earlier 'air injection' so a possible closed port cylinder.
Those came with .325 spur so someone has probably swapped that out at some point.

Had open port and a closed port set ups. Swapped jugs back and forth to time cuts and the cp wasn't enough difference to tell. The open seemed to have more grunt. If you need the 45mm cp piston, lil red barn has 'em on fleabay (windowed). Ran one for about a year before we moved it on down the pike, no problems. We just used gills on the muffin. It was a single chamber on both 55's.

Reliable saws. Only other mods we did were base gasket deletes.

I heated my home for 3 years with a ace hardware special poulan and a friends grandpa gave me a 55 to use one winter as long as I cut him enough to last the winter as well. It never failed me and started way more reliably than my poulan so I ran the snot out of it. Between that saw and my old 038 I don't know if you could get much more reliable than that. That husky wasn't any kind of a slouch either for it's displacement.

First saw I ever ported was a 51, I only widened and reshaped, no timing change. Did a gasket delete and timing advance. Muffler modded, but went entirely too big, this was before I really knew much. Funny thing is I still don't know much, but more than I did then. Off the roll .325 Stihl chisel chain.

Good saws. I've got a 51. It's the only new saw I've ever bought. I've never modded anything on it.
Fwiw, if they're anything like a 41, a 5 gill muffin mod is worth 14%
