Hi guys,
I purchased a Hyway Taiwanese recoil starter assembly for my Farmertec MS660 clone saw kit project. People have said the Farmertec unit is weak. It came in a light gray color I haven't seen before. My other genuine Stihl saws have always had off-white as the contrast color. I'm going to use it anyway but was just wondering if Stihl actually used light gray in their saws.

Todd

PS Yes, I did paint the black stripe and install decals! I don't think you'll find a cover with them already installed...

If you buy a rattle can of paint from Stihl it is called grey not white.

Yeah, I get that but this is a bit more gray than I'm used to. Then say the mid-90s 026 you see on my signature for example.

I have boxes of NOS parts for various brands of saws and the colors changed depending on the time period.

I guess I am lost a bit though as you bought a chicom part and are expecting it to match Stihl?

The starter cover that came with the saw kit is the same cream white color as the other parts. I just bought the Hyway one because it was supposed to be better quality. I'm not expecting everything to be a perfect match in color. I've experienced differences in the color of aftermarket parts in the past. Even OE parts differ as you said. What I'm wondering is whether actual OEM Stihl saws came in Orange and a light shade of gray. Instead of orange and the creamy white color I'm used to with my OE saws and the ones I'm used to seeing...

Stihl changed their shades more than Michael Jackson. The early grey was much different than the later grey. Some later ones were red before they transitioned to a more orange color. The green color I believe was pretty consistent but that was probably more determined by what country's Army they were building them for.

Your recoil cover could be Neotec gray if it’s that dark. I can’t really tell by the pictures.

They’re another Chinese copy brand like Farmertec. They came out with their own color scheme

they all did that. the red belly fords have the correct light gray for Stihl "white"
My Grandfather was on the waiting list for a new Ford 2N during the war. He finally got it in mid 1947. Just before in 1947 the 8N was being sold with the 4 speed tranny and both brakes on the right side. His old 2N is in the shed on the home farm.

I have a few Fords here
2N,
3000
8000

4630

You wanna buy one?

Not really "Neotec" dark but I think it will look kinda cool!

How did you know an 8N restoration is on my bucket list Bill?! When my wife and I retire to our Montana property in a few years, I'm going to start looking for one. Going to do the Ford flathead V8 conversion thing.

I have a plate for the V8 conversion but that is it. None of my business but the that never stopped me from putting my 2 cents before.😀 I would advise you to start looking NOW for the correct engine. From my conversations with folks brighter than I not just any ole Flathead V8 will work.

The second one sure looks like the ‘58 801 I owned.
The 801 was a much more modern tractor. It of course had a OHV engine and more power. I am not positive but some might have even had power steering. Some had 5 speed trannys. I am not sure if any had the junk select-o-speed.

Yes I believe the 871 and maybe there was an 881 that had the select-o-speed. I have a 961 that has 5 speed with live pto
