I'm in the "it doesn't need to be pretty to cut wood camp".
But, my 044, Ms460 and Ms500i all sit on the same shelf. If I just need to get stuff cut up, I'm taking the 500 every time.
My 026 sure ain't pretty. But it works 7 days a week. And, it does the work of 60cc saws thanks to the fine fellers here, especially the p&c that Doc did. So I'm with you there.
An 044/046 hybrid is at least a $1000 saw, no matter how you cut it. Selling his good 50mm P&C will retrieve some Cash.

A muffler modded 500i might be both of your best bet. Mostly, because you won’t be on the hook if it fails. No need to tune, warranty, etc….

Costs add up faster than one could imagine with saws.
I take it the 500's respond well to external mods? What about air filtration? I imagine timing is controlled by the coil (ecm), so no advance would take?

There's a good reason I spend so much time restoring original parts ,there are expensive!
I'm not against using some aftermarket parts that can be utilized for a project saw. I even went with an aftermarket case with my MS440 because sourcing a decent one would have priced it out of completion. I dont care about bragging rights but functional is important.

I put an outerwears pre-filter and an 8 pin on mine and go at it.

Well.... The parts bill exceeded Steve's desire. So I'll be reassembling this saw with a few things freshened up. I'm now the proud owner of a Kolben 460 top end. Now, I just need an 044/440, and I'll build myself a hybrid.

Finally digging in to this thing. Gasket out, had zero thou squish lol. 20230710_172656.jpg
My thoughts : if I bring the exh up to 98*, that'd give me 20* blow down. The uppers on this cylinder are tight. But they don't come in flat across the piston. My thought was to make the exh sides come in flat, and blend that to the slight tilt upwards the intake sides have, without raising them, keeping in mind the intake sides open first... I'd think the intake port needs to open earlier, say 76 degrees. I came to this based on Eric's 044 coming in @ 101.5 *, 120*, and 79.5 *. That saw piss revs, and cuts well until the rpms drop. I just remember it not being as torquey as I had hoped. So I theorize, late exhaust and not enough blow down... I'd appreciate all of your input on my logic, or lack thereof.

If those are truly your numbers, I’d lower the intake to 76-78 and call it a day. They sound pretty perfect exc for the intake.
Thanks AL. I'll check em again.. This cylinder was weird to me. I thought I might see that someone had been in there already. They had not. This thing had 019" squish stock. I can see why he wanted a decomp. Wouldn't you at least widen the exh?

This saw has been done and gone for over a month now. Changes in cell reception at home have hindered my ability to post pictures so I neglected to catch up on this thread. I'll try and do so. These pics show the non decomp straight fun cylinder, the broken dog and stripped screw, and the general filth that had to be chiseled off this poor girl. 20230524_185604.jpg20230524_185818.jpg20230526_042547.jpg

I didn't get a picture of the piston, but one of the muffler bolts had rattled loose at some point a LONG time ago, and likely during startup, bounced its way into the exh port and got pinched between the piston and port roof. The damage was done to the piston mostly. So it got a new piston. The pin didn't look and feel good anyway.... 20230704_075240.jpg20230819_171815.jpg

Gasket deleted, I had to do a lot of sanding to get the squish to 0.022". I wanted to go easy on compression for starting. Brought the intake to 78*. The exh fell nice @ 101.5* transfers @ 122*. Easy peasy. I widened the exh 1mm each way, blended with ought touching roof. Slight angle blend (on the wrong corner, intake side), and shaped the exh side up the uppers to aim flat across piston, also without changing timing.

After multiple discussions about laminar flow, and doing some reading on it, I offered restraint in polishing the exh port. But, after further discussions with some of you fellers about making them Shiney for the customer, I regret my decision. This port being out there could give me a bad name, given by men who know nothing as to why I opted to try the rough surface. It was an expiriment on my part. Although this saw runs exceptionally well, I did two things differently on this saw. The lower tta sfer tilt, and leaving the exh rough. I don't know if either contributed. So from now on, as was before, they get Shiney. 20230715_051550.jpg
