Just how different an animal is the 440 Magnum, from the 10mm 044? I'll do my best to document another project! 20230513_152653.jpg20230513_152636.jpg20230513_152709.jpg
Clearly there's some interchange. I already know the bore is 2mm larger @ 52mm.
1st pull reveals a desperate need for a decomp. I look forward to checking squish and throwing a wheel on it after running it untouched for a bit. I see the air cleaner cover is different, but the carb shroud appears the same. I think I found a K&N that I can make fit in this build. I like the max flow filter, but for the money, and the fact that the cover is hideous... with my 100 percent success in using them, it's time to give K&N a turn. They've been incredibly durable and free flowing. I already know what muff mod to do. It definitely feels like there's not much room for more compression.....🤔

Bore should be 50mm, unless someone has changed it?
The wrist pin is also 12mm .

On the 044 yes. But I believe the ms440 mag is a 52mm and I'd imagine 12mm pin.

My wires are crossed Chief. I'm not inside this 440 yet. I have Andrew's 038 mag on my bench. I'm thinking of that. Also, the other saw this fella wants me to dig into for him, is a homelite 550! Just found that out today.

Other that the 12mm wrist pin and crank, and the port shapes, there is nothing different about the 10 vs 12mm.

Bore and stroke the same.

I’ve never seen an MS440 without a decomp valve. Is the jug drilled and plugged for decomp? If it is, you can get an AM cover and add decomp, or just drill that cover.

If you add an elastostart and pull it like you mean it, you shouldn’t need a decomp.

They made ms440's without a decomp. I've owned 6 or 7 of them in the past, I still have a few of them in my shed.

They do not have provisions for a decomp. It's the same straight fin cylinder, like a late 12mm 044 has.

Few pictures of one I used to own.

Good to know.
This one has no decomp. He wants one too. I'm wondering if the 460 jig will bolt on to the 440 case. Before I dig in, I want to rattle around some options.

I guess the hybrid 440/460 is a popular swap? And there's a couple of build threads on them.

Etsy , I think they came from Europe. I'll see if I can find a link.
I personally like the 044/440 for what it is,the 046/460 does have more torque for a longer bar in is working range . If I was only gonna run a 24" bar I'd stick with the 70cc cylinder, 28" and longer the 77cc is better.

I'm just blown away by how much harder this 440 is to pull than the 044 I built. Begs the question, is it my timing? When I get back from this gtg, I'm gonna open her up. I've never worked on a 440. All new to this greenhorn. I've been getting some high quality stickers from etsy too. Mclains gear I think it's called. They are quality vinyl. Tough! I like your choice of placement Chief! I never thought it felt right putting a foot there.

Measure the squish through your spark plug hole first.
I have an 044 that has around 17.5 squish, and it can be contrary but not terrible. That MS440 non decomp slant fin I just built has .022 and its not bad at all to start.
