A friend has expressed an interest in my trusty ole 441.

Seems to be in decent shape except for 4 things I noticed...
1. Staining on piston near rings. Crosshatch marks still present except the very bottom of the piston.
2. Missing muffler screw hole plug.
3. Muffler is a touch pug-nosed (smooshed)
4. Crack in top part of chain brake handle. (That piece of tape has been on there at least 10 years.)

I have a bunch of pics to upload so I hope ya'll don't mind...

Saw is vintage Feb. 2007
First 20+ tanks of fuel were Stihl orange bottle dino at 50:1
Next bunches of tanks were Stihl Ultra HP at a touch over 50:1
Last two tanks were Schaeffers at 40:1
Did a 2 year or so stint of 100LL AV fuel, otherwise E-free 89 or better unleaded.

Finally the cylinder pics.
Not sure about the staining. Is this common? don't want to pass on a lemon to anyone!

the last pic is of the bottom of the cylinder shows a bit of a rub mark. Rest of the cylinder shows crosshatches.
There is a piece of lint/dust/dirt on the cylinder wall in the center of the pic. Made sure everything was clean before putting it back together.

With bar and chain you dropped about a grand on this saw when new. It might pull $700 today.
So...a 13 year old Stihl pro saw that has been superseded is worth 70% of its retail price when new? If your valuation is correct, that's madness! Would you pay 70% of msrp on an old model 13y/o saw? I'm not saying your wrong, I'm just thinking if your right that's almost crazy.

Here's the 24" bar I was going to offer to him.
I would put a couple of New Oregon LGX 3/8 x 050 x 84dl with it...

441 is a $400 saw at best to me. I despise working on them and I’d need room to fix anything and flip it.

I'm hoping he wouldn't have to do anything to it. It's been trouble free for me for almost 13 years.

In the first couple of months the handle was hitting the back of the filter cover. Dealer replaced the handle and cover and put the stiffer antivibe Stihl recommended for the fix.

Is the compression too low to be considered a decent runner?

Shucks guys, you disappoint me. I started out high with my estimate because a few years ago the Stihl saws were hardly depreciating. Then M-tronics came along and wrecked that trend. Five years ago I bought and sold an MS440 for $500 with a 28" bar and two sharp chains. I figured a good used 441 would have to be worth more than that.

Looks like depreciation has us all by the throat.:(

I’m always a bit low on pricing. Anything used is 75% or less based on condition. I try more so to be 50% on used stuff.

A 441 is not a 044 or 440!

044/440 are more desirable saws that hold there value better. Think of the 044 as a vintage Mercedes that holds value.... now the 441 is a new Mercedes... as soon as you drive it off the lot you just lost a lot of money.
