Would you bother raising transfers that were, say around 128*

My thinking is that will make the upper port larger and lower velocity, but is the tradeoff worth it
If there going to be over 125 I'd use a different cylinder.

Now this has me thinking

Fitting the 288 piston to the 064 works well if you have a cylinder with transfers starting at under 120*, as they end up in the low 120's once machined.

My cylinder already has the transfers at 122*
Will I get a similar result with an OEM piston with this cylinder?

I guess there is only one way to find out!

I cant see it running bad :)

You will gain 3 to 4 degrees of transfer timing with a 288 piston.
I haven't tried one over 124 but I will, only one way to find out.

Bet it works just fine if you keep the intake opening point above 80*

Ahhhhh well its taken a setback with the deal on the lathe falling through.

I was only getting it because it was affordable.

It will have to sit in the box as a dirty pile of parts till I can get more money together to get myself one but at the moment, unfortunately the bills have to come first.

Just got this one the other week, it needs some cleaning and tlc but the price was right

Thread resurrection.

I have decided to fit this up to my 066 as I have the 064 running as an 064 and once ported, its AWESOME.
I just fitted the 288 piston to it and bolted on the Mahle cylinder with no gasket.

Measures 95/117/79

Going to take .060 ish off the base to tuck in the ring and go with a thin gasket.

Will see where its at once I do this but I will be happy if I can get the exhaust down to 98 - 99*
That should plant the transfers at about 120 - 121*

If i need to put a bit of Devcon in the bottom of the intake, I will

With the 090 operational, this job moved back onto the bench.

Took .045 off the base and with no gasket (.065 total drop) I got 98/122/82
That's a big improvement on what it was.

I will take enough the base to get a gasket in and then take a bit more off the band to set the squish.

Here is the squish cutter I made from a $8 Chinese piston and a bit of power hacksaw blade.
Cut a slot with a hacksaw and hammered it in, then leveled and sharpened it on the linishing belt
I have a 2nd piston with emery cloth stuck to it to sand it after the cutter roughs it in.

I have 80 grit emery glued to some nice flat smooth laminate shelve timber to sand the base.

How long does it take to remove .065 off the base using the sandpaper method?

about 1.5 beers :)

I put a lot of pressure on it and sand back and forth.
I go back and forth 10 times and rotate 1/4 clockwise and go again.
2 x full cycles of the cylinder and then check all 4 corners. I usually have about .010 gone.
As I push I put more pressure on the edge closest to me, as I pull I put the pressure on the edge furthest from me.

If I find one edge getting thicker it gets leveled out and then I go again on the cycle.

I sanded .045 from the base in about an hour and that wasn't solid sanding. I stopped to check timing twice and was in no rush.

The big thing is to measure, measure, measure!

I measure each corner before I start and write it on the cylinder with a sharpie. Helps you keep track on how much you have removed.

The sheets of Emery are about $1.50 each at the local hardware store, and sticking them on laminate timber lets me glue it on and then peel it off when its worn out and scrape the glue from the laminate so I can stick more down.

perfectly flat too

Any opinions on the timing?

98/122/82 sounds good but would I be better off taking a bit more off and filling the intake a bit?
I still have a few more degrees on the exhaust before it free ports

I dont want to move the torque too high up in the rev range.

Looking good brews!! I also sanded the base on my 066. Did exactly as you. Took .050 off. I found that if you put a little bevel on the base it helps to save the paper.

Got the transfers done, nothing major, just shape for flow and direction.
Widened the exhaust and flattened out the exhaust roof.
Squared out the intake tidied it all up.

Got it back together and fired
up.
It sounds so much better..... Sounds happy and cranky all at once.

I just realized the only thing I never checked was compression.

Bang on 180 psi cold after 30 seconds run time on the new ring.
That's an improvement on the 150 it used to blow and still easy to start without the decomp
