I cant wait to get this saw here.
I will likely leave my brothers 044 stock as he is inexperienced using a saw.
It will also give me a good base reference for mine as I work it.

I am going to leave my brothers 12mm saw in bits so I weigh both cranks and other bits to see the difference.

Can a bloke still get a 10mm OEM piston?

I've yet to see an older 10mm with a black switch @MustangMike

But that doesnt mean they don't exist

Yeah I priced a 10mm piston at the Stihl dealer... $240 plus gst, she said I can have it for $250 rofl.

OEM 10mm & 12mm piston kits can be had for under $50 from the dealer.
The MSRP is something like $45.99

That is a lot for part of the rotating assembly. In fact, it is the worst possible piece to be over weight. That said, these saws are generally over built, so you should be OK.

yeah i got a couple from Definitive Dave.
and got the meteor kit for HL Supply along with a couple of extra meteor pistons. all 10mm. i am all 044'd up

Unaware at the time.
stihl ones go in the keepers and meteor ones go in the flippers.

If like to run my early 12mm against a stock 460/046 to see how much of a difference there is. I know a 372 runs with a stock 460 under 24" wood.

Yep, and then you have to buy the rings, wrist pin and wrist pin clips separately

I think the 10mm may have 12mm ring pin spacing Jeremy. So it may enable you to run a 12mm jug on a 10mm Saw. The larger intake may help more than the weight issue doesn't.

Planning on swapping an OEM piston back into my ported 10mm saw, but I'm not sure that the intake port isn't too wide already.

I plan on weighing the meteor I am putting in my brothers 044 and putting it on a weight loss program with the dremel.
If I can take 5 grams off it I will be happy

It's the internal piston bosses as well Tony. They're too wide.

Yes they are.
That's why I won't run them, and why I'm wondering why guys still buy them.
I did a thread on AS in regards to this issue about 2yrs ago.

So is the boss width just a weight issue of can it cause other problems?

the width of the bosses and and the where the wrist pin bearing sits is a couple of mm difference i think. so people are worried that it has too much float or pin is unsupported a tad. while not the best option i dont think its that detrimental.

Its a "Meh" for me too.

I just got offered another early 10mm 044 for a good price as its got running issues but good compression and no piston scoring.

Waiting on pictures before I buy.

Serial number starts with 123

Its no show pony but once rebuilt it will cut wood just as well.
