If you put the hd2 filter on a early 044 you will have to pull the rubber gasket off of the air filter base so the top cover fits properly. The gasket is not needed on the hd2 because the filter already has one on it and the old style filter does not.

It is my understanding that each + represents a revision, the details of which I have never seen.

The slant fin KS jugs will have the + marks in the upper front left hand corner of the jug, right on top, right after the KS & a number sequence.

For example: KS 115/21 +++. I believe the Mahle jugs have the plus marks on the base.

My low hour 12mm 044 is an early one with the slant fins, red choke lever and metal tag. Stock it seemed to run like a stock 2171/372xp with more torque. Just put a dual port muffler cover and hd2 filter on it and seems to have gained 300rpms from those two improvements.

They respond very nicely to those 2 mods, and further gains are usually to be had from timing advance and base gasket delete. Generally, deleting the base gasket will result in approximately 20/1000 squish, no further work required.

My Red Lever 044 also has a B cylinder (marked on top, center), and a KS A/B piston with the wings on it.

I purchased a replacement OEM 10 mm piston for it, but it did not have the wings and was a tad shorter, so I left the original piston in the saw (it was in good shape).

I'm told the wings help to stabilize the piston. Don't know if the wings also contribute to some positive air flow in the cylinder, but they sure as heck don't hurt!

the 046 of mine is not a d jug i bought the cylinder off of old cat on the other forum and has been a runner since

i think the cucumber tree is a member of the poplar family

Timing seems pretty far advanced stock on mine, if you don't pull it over like you mean it it will snap the rope right back.

I'll guess that it is an early SN. It also has an A cylinder.

It is the same as my 044 with SN 120******. I'll bet yours is close to that.

Also notice the SN on those early saws is in the opposite direction from the later ones.

Yes, SN 120****** has one + and an A cylinder, SN 126****** has 3 + and a B cylinder, and red lever. Also 120 has small bolt on the recoil, 126 has large bolt.
