I will dall!

The 2nd saw I got had a DP cover so I cleaned it up and bolted it on.

It went from being lean cold to a short rich bog when I gun the throttle. Not much, just a momentary hesitation and is 4 stroking stronger.

So it want more muffler.

I will retune and fit the DP cover I have on my brothers saw that's had the opening doubled, see if it changes again.

Glad to see you playing around with the mufflers. I sent my 044 down the road yesterday. Got a pile of saws in return but I'm sure it will be worth it later on.

I have learnt that just hacking lots of big hols in a ported saws muffler is not always best
I apply a more controlled approach these days and slowly increase open area till it no longer gains.

My stock saws really liked a "more is better" approach but when I ported them they became un-tunable pigs.
Closed the mufflers back up a bit and they were back on board.

Dont ask........ I dont know why. I just know thats what I found

I ditched the dual port front cover.
I have blocked off the front cover opening on both my 064 and 066 and both run better with 2 side openings. I don't know why but they are snappier and feel more.... free.

I put the closed front cover back on and added a side port on the flywheel side that's about the same size as the opened up factory port to try and keep pressure drops in the muffler even on both sides.

Will see how it runs tomorrow.

Well it goes like a scalded cat.

When I ran it up after adding the 2nd side port, it was at 16070 rpm WOT.
Backed it off and it is 4 stroking at 15100 and don't she cut like a champion!

Cut twice as fast as an 076 super running the same size bar and chain which opened an eye or 2

I am thinking I will test it out with a 16" bar running 325 and a 9 pin.

My 064 has gone a bit quiet, I think it's nervous.
I might have to open it back up and grind in some of my learnings from this 044 cylinder

Unless it's clean and green, even 8 pin 325 just makes for blunt chains faster in our timber. It'll be a 3 cut demon though!
Nice looking saw. Don't have anything 70cc at the moment, these have to be about the top of the list.

Yeah I was just thinking of using the bar and chain off my 026 for a bit of fun.

It will live it's life content to run 20" 3/8 and a 7 pin sprocket. Geez it cut well with that.

Looking really gd, like the side port, you added to the muffler, I used a 288 style on the bottom of the front cover, it hides nicely down there, as does yours on the side, nxt time I will be "borrowing " your idea.

Don't know how I stopped following this thread, glad you posted the reference and I picked it up again.

They are my favorite saw! Can do anything from limbing to bucking.

Mike, it's becoming my favourite too
I love it

I made a video to compare 2 x 038's I rebuilt recently
One stock, one ported.
I ran the 044 after the 038's.

The 038's are running sharp identical semi chisel 3/8
The 044 has full chisel 3/8
All round filed

Timber is dead, dry and rock hard

Thanks Tony, I had seen that (even commented on the bark), but it was on another thread.

Your 044 looks very healthy, good job!

I will have to pinch myself, the second new 044 thread of the day! I love my red lever 044, my SN starts with 126, so let me start with a few questions: 1) Is it a KS jug? If so, how many + marks?

I just popped the jug off my other 10mm 044 I have here and its a KS ++
Pristine condition inside.

Now the question is, what to do with it.

I might pull the crank and motor and put them aside for safe keeping and watch what happens with the 044/046BB @jmssaws is building.
