I have witnessed deaths of Forums before that were once robust. Seems that the 'cliquey' places all fall off eventually. There is one that I've been on for almost 20 years now that keeps ploughing on but the cliques seem to rotate there a bit as it's a vehicle based forum and when a member gets another make of ride, they go to another venue.

The ones who keep these places alive are the knowledgable who *like to help others.

Having kept up with this thread so far I have a few observations. I may get called a “new guy” or some other thing as I’ve only been here for a little over a year but I’ll say my piece anyway.

1 - all yall “OG’s” with your attitudes of “we started this place and yall just plain ‘don’t know’” is a very toxic thing in a few ways. I’m not bashing the thought of seniority in any way but the way it’s comes across on OPE is it gives the air of “we’re better than you so go pound sand”. That’s great if you don’t want the member base to grow and the site to be more active. New members bring different stuff into the mix. You may not like that and that’s fine. FYI I’m a looooooong way from a let’s all just get along kind of guy. Im more in the camp of singing in the shower while trying not to get caught sneaking a peak but that’s neither here nor there. If you “OG’s” want this site to grow and stay alive you need to cut back on the “I was here first” stuff.

2 - like I said earlier, no one but the buyer and seller should or need to be involved with the sales process. One of the sites I mod’d we required a he equivalent of the “GoldMember” badge on here to post in the for sale section as well as in some of the off topic areas where it was more self moderation than staff moderation. If things got out of hand we’d step in but that was rare. When things circled around illegal things was about the only time the mods stepped in on those threads.

3 - everyone has a different definition of what “drama” is and none of them belong in the info threads. No one needs to post anything that isn’t directly related to the topic. A side conversation about buttering my bread in a thread about how to rebuild a carb may seem fun at the time but for anyone looking to join the site because of the information the find it’s quite off putting. I’d suggest keeping that stuff behind the “GoldMember” areas.

4 - I will also echo the gay/homo stuff is a big rampant. Saying it can’t be stopped because that’s how it’s always been is an excuse that is invalid in my opinion. Is the goal is truly to grow the site and keep it alive and active or just be a hang out spot for a few guys to blow off steam ? It can be both but needs to be structured in such a way that you know when you’re gonna walk into those areas and can avoid them if you want to.

5 - All that being said, this is the internet folks. There have been a few loud keyboard thumpers in this thread that just have to have the last word or like causing drama for no reason and that’s okay. Don’t sink to their level and add pages to a thread that do nothing but make you both look like kindergarteners. Arguing with someone online is almost never productive.

6 - Calling someone out isn’t a bad thing either but it belongs in a feedback thread about buying/selling or in the thread the transaction started in. Post up the issues and why it did or didn’t go the way you expected and move on. You run the risk of getting burnt in every single transaction you ever make online.

7 - I strongly agree with a site leadership team that has zero things financial to gain from their role. That being said, a builder/porter as a staff member brings some legitimacy to the site.

The gay/homo stuff could maybe completely be stopped but that unfortunately is a large part of some of the older guys here and to completely alienate them for being themselves isn’t any more fair than forcing the new members to participate in it. It’s kind of a you have to decide what you deme right and go with it. Yes you may loose some new members but is that worse than making all the old leave? As far as sidetrack banter on a sales add that has to be up to poster of add and if they want it allowed or not. Some may view it as bumps and don’t mind jokes and others may be offended or not want it for other reasons. If you don’t care let it go if you do tell them give it a rest and this is my thoughts on some of the issues.

I'm more of a FNG than you, never been a Mod anywhere, but just thought I'd throw something out there FYI, and not directed towards anyone in particular. Followed this forum for about 6 years before joining, a Google search brought me here and to AS when I was diagnosing an old saw for someone. I mostly followed the info threads through the years and saw several characters I thought I'd get along with and a couple not so much. But when Dallas' fundraiser came around I thought it was time to give back a little something and I joined so I could donate, b/c over the years Dallas, as well as many others really did give a lot of knowledge to people who asked.
Point being that I thought more of the comradery and helpfulness than the petty personal squabbles after lurking for years and still joined, knowing there was a lot of BS in the background to sometimes filter through. I've made 60 trips around the sun, so grew up in the era of guys being crude / homo comments etc., so I take no offense, you do you.
Sometimes I find it funny (still get a chuckle at John's bartender getting a bare-ass spanking), and sometimes I breeze over it cuz I don't have the time for it, that's my choice. Hell, in my opinion it's everyone's choice, lighten up and don't be so tender to get easily butt-hurt, it's mostly just folks poking fun at each other.
