As one of the guys who was here when ope came about I try to stay out of the bs. Unfortunately this time I was reading things as it was brought to light. How it was brought to light really was wrong in my opinion. Deals go bad and we want to make sure the next person doesn’t get burned by the same member but it could have been handled so much better. At the end of the day we only have one side of the story. I’m not taking sides in this mess. It would be nice to get ope back to the good ole days. You could see people were starting to disappear for quite some time and yet no one stopped to ask what was going on. In the end we are all human and make mistakes.

In this thread alone, im seeing quite a few names that make me think, "Oh, yeah, that guy! Awesome!" So maybe, just maybe, one result of the recent unpleasantness might be that we regain valued contributors. I sure hope so. Half of my time here is reading old posts, often by people who don't post here any more.

I'm not looking for a return to the past, but for a future where good ideas are shared, and skills are passed on to them young whippersnappers.

If I were spending a lot of money on a chainsaw purchase I would only pay via PayPal goods and services, at that way you have some protection. Thats worth the 3% fee in my opinion.
This is supposed to be the rule.

The name of this thread is “So where do we go from here, folks“.
There were members making suggestions that had no idea of the most recent happenings. Where do you feel the line should be drawn? Should they have knowledge of the most recent event? The most recent 2 events? Seems implicit that he’s asking members who have watched the cycle of events on this forum and others preceding it so we can try our best for that not to happen again. It has nothing to do with what you are implying as arrogance.
When the general public is asked an opinion you will get all kinds of responses from those that are both as informed as you’d like an as informed as they can/want to be. There is no good way to relay every single bit of info to every single member, nor does every single member care enough to want to know.

“So where do we go from here, folks“ sounds like a general question. Sorry I misread 🤷‍♂️

If you don't know the backstory, that is fine, but this thread isn't for you then.
If y'all don’t want the general forum to chime in this should have started and stayed as an invite only PM type discussion so us non-knowing-every-detail types wouldn’t have had to opportunity to embarrass ourselves.

:nusenuse: I have no clue what went down and have no reason to dig into looking.

Im only on here to get info on repairs n ideas on moding my own stuff. Car forums/NASIOC is where i started and there were plenty of Trolls and moderators who were absolute Oges way back in 2002. There still are plenty of jerks out there who only want to flex their inter-web muscles or have no tolerance for lack of knowledge or experience.. Weather they are salty OGs or a new comer with zero knowledge both IMO need to be aware of those around them and conduct themselves with an air of respect and honor. In the real world when around the wrong/unfamiliar people without such foresight in ones conduct you can get shot in the face..... literally. With the experiences from other forums I must say these problems and these of people will ever go away. The only way to minimize them is to police them as a community. If everyone ignores them and doesnt give them any type of reaction or platform to encourage their banter they will faded away. ( yes this is what everybody's Mom told them and it didnt work, but this is the internet and there's no physical contact. You dont have to be here and they can be ignored with minimal effort ) In the area of sale it goes the same way "public opinion" always weights more then anything on a forum. If you have a good rep and want to keep it, its pretty obvious how to do so. Even when a mistake is made it takes time and work to repair, and fringe parties usually dont hear about the positive. When real world issues and a lack of decorum on the inter-web get together, this is were things always seem to get out of hand.

I dont want to see this place go away. NASIOC got so big Subaru actually bought them and now they are a corporately owned padded room. Now you cant say much off color or post images that go against "their" policy's without getting warned and then put into no posting timeout or weeks.

IMO if things are getting out of hand on a thread that s not in the "off topic" area the mods should be warning via PM and if it continues the culprit gets locked out of posting for a while. If the thread is way off topic and has no value to the initial posting then just lock it.

In the end problems like these are solved by all of us.

Unfortunately 3 or 4 years ago when @gentlemen revised the site all the feedback in history was lost. So keep that in mind fellas when looking at buyers or sellers.
That was me. Sorry, but it was not avoidable. This new platform simply did not offer what we had. :(

I guess my point was, how would you know where we go from here if you don’t know where we’ve been.

My take on forum direction is this. There ain’t one, it’s several given the members that currently exist here. On one hand you have the OG OPE guys that want it to go back to like it was before 2020, which were the good old days. Started by many Gen Xers who don’t have feelings or care about hurting feelings or calling people gay or homo, or anything that generally pisses off anyone who has feelings. The newer members want no part of that for whatever reason, and there in lies the problem. The newer members want the tech/info without all that brought it to the forum, that doesn’t make it right or wrong it just is what it is. However that is who build the site and all its history, like it or not, because without all that there is no OPE.

On the other hand it can’t go back to what it was because many of the productive members who were booted from here by Randy or the ones that just got sick of the double standard Randy imposed on the forum ain’t never coming back. Imagine making Stump a moderator and then him moderating the dynamic douche oh’s of Mustang Mike and RI Chevy only to be smacked down for doing so. People get put off by it and leave, next thing you know Randy gets fed up with both and then ends up banning RI Chevy. Now you lost productive members because Randy picked winners and losers on the forum. That happened over and over again to the point where we are where we’re at now with very few build threads, very few interesting conceptual projects like Eggshooters oil testing, new GTG’s being created etc. I don’t bring all this up to dump on Randy, he dumped all over himself. I state it simply as the way not to moderate a forum as it will kill one quicker than anything will. The single biggest thing for this site to overcome is the 2 factions that remain on the site, +Randy and -Randy. It doesn’t matter which camp you are in, but this ain’t ever going away here, or at least anytime soon.

Lastly, there is only so many times you can repeat the same thing. I could post a 60cc class 2 series Husky build, but why? There is like 150 of them on the internet in print and tube-U videos. Porters who do it for a living got tired of getting ripped off, then the hacks started showing up which was an entirely different and unnecessary tangent the forum took. Myself, I went to a GTG, found out I like going to them, got to run different porters saws, figured out which model’s and porters I liked and shelled out my money. Can’t buy all the equipment and tooling to port 3-4 saws for what you can pay a professional to do it for you, which is what many new members think they are going to get to see here.

Myself, I’m of the minimal moderation theory, while not popular, there is as others have mentioned a certain amount of self moderation required to belong to any site. If you can’t handle the results of an election or the direction society or the world in general flows a saw forum certainly isn’t suitable for you.

With all that stated above, my take is that this site will never be able to be what it once was, too much has happened and too many camps of thought or allegiances to overcome. A clean break and a fresh start would be the most logical choice but also the most painful and time consuming. The new site admin here has a tough road ahead, but given the right direction and input it could be doable and enjoyable for all.
Maybe chainsawforum.com is for you. Have you posted there?
