We have a John Deere zero Turn at work I like it a lot but seems heavy to me and we have a 52" exmark with a Kawasaki engine I really like that one and 2 other exmark walk behinds. I like ferris walkbehinds as well I believe they are owned by snapper pro

My take on a few mowers they all mow grass some just do it better different ways

some are like a bush hog and work ok mowing some throw and spread grass better
Fast down the road don't mean you can go fast setting in the seat in rough yards
some set high some set lower some have better controls
There all built by man and all have some trouble and have updated parts

Hustler tough built commercial mower also several models of good home owner mowers the cheaper home grade at lowes is ok has nice smooth controls push handles out set the brakes simple to work on,,,, add flex forks and they ride better got lots of them here mowing crews and home owner
I'm Thinking Big Dog is a red Hustler

Ferris Best ride by far they drive good mow good just not a fan of the over complicated control parts and cables on the brakes on some newer models way to many safety switches on some....... Take a ferris ride with the simple Hustler controls be a damn fine mower

most ztr mowers are too stiff beat the heck out of you most try some kind of front spring setup or seat

Exmark ive heard good things about the job they do cutting grass

BadBoy ive been on a few ok mowers ran one with the elect raise deck sets higher up

I'm not a fan of the flat free front tire rides too rough

The Vangard big block has been a good motor around here I just seen the first one with a cracked head commercial cutter 800 hrs
Kawasaki have been good and ive seen them stand behind there warranty
I'm friends with a ferris and hustler dealer and had my hands greasy in all brands in his shop there is no best they all break

Pretty good rundown @husky362.

Around here, Exmark is known as the best cut. Ferris rides nice, but the cut is marginal, while all of that moving stuff becomes expensive when things have to be replaced down the road. Most other manufacturers solve the problem with a good suspension seat. Rides just as nice as a ferris, but far less complicated.
Snapper Pro is a Ferris without the suspension, and both are owned by Briggs & Stratton.

Out of the options Carl listed, Scag, Gravely, and Hustler would be the 3 I'd consider. All well built and they cut pretty nice. Gravely and Hustler are direct, where Scag goes through a distributor. Either channel has some advantages. Gravely and Hustler might have some sttronger offerings in the consumer-prosumer price points. ($2999-$5999).

Can't just look at the mowers though. Need to study the programs and compare the terms offered and the inventory committment you have to make for each line.

This season is already winding down. We're already putting Ariens snow thros in the showroom, not that anyone wants to see those things yet. :) But you've got all winter to make up your mind, so take your time and study all the options.

@Miller Mod Saws take it from me.....listen to what Bob has to say because my business is built around second tier saws with very little local logging and a minimal amount of landscapers. It takes allot of sales to generate any real income. I dont know exact numbers but i sell a ton of Makita saws(keep 100+ in stock) and I went the route Bob suggested, low prices to entice customers to buy my stuff instead of stihl, counting on the increased sales to generate increased work in the shop and parts sales. As a whole it has been a failure....even at 2-300 saws per year I might only work on 5-10 dolmar per month vs 20 stihls per week. I have a 36x48 building and it is waaaaaaay too small for any ride on mowers(i barely have room to display a push mower) inside and i flat out refuse to leave new mowers out in the weather 24/7 so i stick to handheld and just keep adding parts and accessories for them even though i ran out of room a long time ago(ask anyone thats been in my shop).

Personally on the mower front, I would avoid Bad Boy, local husky dealer sells them so we see quite few and they arent impressive. broken frames, bad spindles, and just general poor construction is the norm....but hey they look cool with the laser cut graphics in the rear bumper. I would guess Spartan falls into the same category since they are fairly new startup and put allot of effort into looking cool but never seen one in person to know for sure.

Scag seems to be popular in my area and we work on them very little other than normal maintenance issues.

I tried selling Encore Z's for a couple years....very well built mowers with a nice price point but they are like trying to sell Jonsered, it takes a cheap price to entice people to buy them because they arent flashy or well known.

We have a Toro and Exmark dealer that has huge money in just parts inventory, I remember at one time it was mandatory to keep "x" amount of parts on hand, big money to have sitting on shelves.

They are have been around for many years, sell in volume for new machines, parts counter has 3 people working, but they also have a huge old warehouse they lease as their repair and parts shop = huge continued investment.

Ask as many questions as possible before committing to a line and good luck with your new adventure!

Ok....but do you really need a 10K mower to mow a tiny patch of grass?
Randy, Randy, Randy. What does need have to do with this?! I mow an acre but certainly don't need an Exmark Laser Z :) I don't need 50 chainsaws and 50 vintage axes either!
