Hey- I've read up to page 46 on this (and others as well) and did searches on the fourm but have so far seen no mention of this grinder which is currently available at Baileys from time to time.. does anyone have any experience with these? Gotta say to me it sounds good and is cheaper than what you would pay for some of the old Silvey models.. opinions? Thoughts? Experience? Please share any you have.

I just bought this grinder and got it last week. I have wanted a square grinder for almost 40 years. I had always wanted a silvey or possibly a simmington.

I saw this last year and the features and potential precision appealed to me. I got it set up and though I have never ground square cut chain, I was able to get a wonderful square grind in about 30 minutes of sorting out various settings.

I have to say that this grinder is incredibly easy to set up and adjust. The precision is amazing. I was able to adjust top plate angle and side plate angle (profile of the stone) very easily and then adjust the angles for a more or less aggressive cut and immediately go back to prior settings since the angles are all available on the dressers.

The height of the carriage is adjustable so it is easy to make the top plate grind sharper or more blunt ( like a chisel vs a knife) by moving the carriage up and down.

The variable speed motor is a really nice feature too. You will actually use it. The work light is really bright and stays exactly where you put it. This machine is quality and precise. Everything has bearings and the tolerances are tight. I have not used the simmington but have no regrets with this purchase. I will also mention that the machine came perfectly adjusted so that the wheel is at the same height for both sides of the cutters. In the event that you get a machine that does not come
From the factory perfectly adjusted. It would take nothing more than a tweak to the leveling screws and the set screw to set it perfectly. It is very thoroughly engineered and thought out. It is also appreciably more expensive than the simmington but the value is all there. I would buy it again. Bailey’s got it to me in less than a week from order and the packaging was first rate. No damage and the machine was bolted to a plywood structure and surrounded by expanded foam and packing paper.

You will have no regrets if you purchase it.

Are you asking about the shape of the wheel, or the wheel itself? Either one is easy, and similar to every other grinder new or old.

if you can move the carriage in far enough on the sides to get the cutter on the stone further toward the center. that grinder has endless cutter geometry possibilities

Also I don’t know who commented about the dressing the wheel is very important on the 450 but I can believe that….when I dress the side plate it doesn’t creat the slight forward lean of the side plate….its just straight up and down on the grinding wheel…sounds like I need to look at adjusting the side plate wheel dresser….

You might just need to move the stone arbor on the motor shaft. The 450 lacks a vertical adjustment in the arm you so have to move the stone arbor when making massive changes to angles.
