Here is a .404 been sharpened twice i think by the steps cut into it ,next time i will do the gullets and check rakers (they are still untouched from new ),.404 comes off the roll with lower raked than 3/8 i think ,it was throwing nice chips ,fell 2 trees with this chain ,limbed and bucked into firewood rounds ,hour meter on tach said .5 so a half hour actual run time on this chain i guess ? Still seems pretty sharp .On a chain used for work ,i think it is a waste of time to do the gullets every sharpen ,it still cuts fast this way .

Great pictures man! I Decided my poor old blue wheel was completely wore out was part of the problem. Decided to try out the white this time and adjusted both top and sideplate dress to as near as I could get to your profile as possible. I think I got it about as close as I'm going to get it. Can't thank you enough for your help. What do you think?

The white wheel seems to leave a beautiful finish on the cutter.

Looks great! I need to put my blue wheel back on. I've been using this one to convert from round to square

Since we got a few pics of different wheels up on this page, maybe we should talk about the different ones. What color wheel is everyone runnin? I've only tried the two in the pics. Next one I get will be a grey waxed wheel.

Actually I did, just barely nicked them. It just doesn't show well in that photo. I'm running my wheel pretty close to the top which helps for not hitting the straps

I really like the blue wheel, just using the white because it was an emergency spare I had on hand. I got to say I like the looks of the finish with the white stone, but I know it's not going to last me three years like that Bluestone did. Also I'm not sure that the finish is any better than the blue to be completely honest. Have any of you guys bought a blue stone lately and know what they cost from Madsens?

I didn't like the dark brown one that came with the grinder. Very fast material removal Without burning the cutter, but the finish left a lot to be desired IMHO.

They work well for converting round to square, but you need to keep an eye on your corner cuz wheel wear can change corner location in the middle of a chain.

Last blue wheel I bought was thirty somthin

The blue is my favorite for holding it's shape.......but we use a salmon colored wheel for converting.
Is the salmon wheel different than the brown wheel that they come with?

Salmon is different than Brown. The gray waxed is what I used a lot of but they wear fast. The finish isn't that important for a work chain. I never noticed a time difference from finish on the cutter from the different color wheels.

Do you believe there to be any advantage to having you finer finish on the cutter. Does it last any longer?

True. I would think edge geometry would be of much greater importance than surface finish, however In my experience a knife with a refined edge tends to keep that edge longer. it may not help , but not going to hurt anything either.
