I'm actually wondering myself how much hotter the gases are that come straight out the front vs on a side or top deflector. I don't have a temp gun, but I'd bet if it's straight down and out the front that it's maybe 300° F hotter than if it's on the side or top and pointed forward.

That being said, I have several that exit the lower front
I wanted to put it on the left side but was afraid with the heat on a felling cut would be hot on the left hand. Theres not alot of room there for a mod with the flange and muffler being recessed.its just a limbing 50 cc saw its not a 90cc felling saw buried in a cut for a half a tank of full .andy wellman built the same saw for a buddy of mine from west house saws.thats exactly were he put it.thats actually were i fot idea from.my buddy is a logger he uses it daily he hasnt caught the woods on fire, thanx

Straight out the front is the fastest exit for the exhaust gasses. Which is also why it is the fastest and used among race saws.

As for work saws, it's just not worth it. Should be side exit or some sort of deflector if used in the front

Were is @Redbull661 I'm sure he has numbers! And I'm not sure about the rest of you guys but it's so humid around here I have a hard time starting a fire with gas let alone chainsaw exhaust lol.

I've started a few logs on fire with a ms 250 that I opened straight out the front

I have a thermocoupler its in my toolbox in my muti meter bag along with various other meter attatchments so according to what deeets said.if im understanding this correctly the saw will run cooler but exhaust gases will be hotter thats good to know.

I'm just guessing here, but I bet you could run higher egt's on a saw with a box muffler than a sled with an expansion chamber.

No backstuffing of hot gasses with the saw, just hot gas out and fresh charge in.

A spacer gasket between cylinder and muffler.i know a guy who puts em on his sleds and saws.aka kinda like the spacer on 064 and 036 imo i think this may be why they run so good.
