I believe the mufflers on those are aluminized steel. Grind the coating off the muffler around where you will be brazing. I use emt tubing on a lot of mods, but I turn off the galvanized coating in my lathe. That zinc crap will cause all kinds of issues when you get it hot. Try to grind the galvanizing off the tube as well.

I don't use a lathe but I always take the galv off of the EMT where it gets brazed. Never have any problem with the pipe, just this Stihl muffler body.

Yea, more heat with the AC torch does seem to help but I have overdone it and blown through the .028g metal :p
I even tried TIG at low power…that was a joke.

I need more practice braising, just that simple.

Now that I think of it, when I modded a couple ms271’s, I mig welded on a FW side deflector. So I guess I have never tried brazing on those. On the 261’s & 362’s that are stainless, I Tig weld deflectors on.

Out of curiosity…and because I have a bunch of these to do :p
Why a 3-port rather than dual?

And, what material are you using? Silver solder, brass, bronze?
To get rid of some more heat, both these 64’s that have your cylinders are ported pretty warm. On my work saws, I'll usually just run duals

Silicon bronze tig, seems to work best for me as I have to tig a screen inside to keep FS happy.

Cool. I have tried ss tig but that was a joke. I need to get more braising practice. I'm pretty good with the MIG and running a row of tacs but it doesn't always work. The newer mufflers are even thinner guage and MIG doesn't work at all.

Yea mig is tough on the pop can mufflers. .023 and run down hand fast keeping heat on the pipe.
1/16 SS tig can work same as er70s just really have to watch your heat.

Nice! Any issues figuring out brake handle clearance?
I wonder if that longer pipe is better than the shorts I usually use.
When I do a muffler mod my goal is usually to make more unrestricted flow with as little extra noise as possible. So I usually use a longer piece of tubing. They seem to give a noticable power increase and not so loud that they wake the dead. If I want it to be as quite as possible I'll let the pipe extend into the muffler body a little ways. I often will close off the OEM opening also. Allows me to have total control over the size of the outlet based on tubing size.
As far as brake clearance I usually set the brake and then mark where I want the pipe to sit. Remove the muffler and braze the pipe where I want it.

Ignore the crap welding... it works well and takes the peakiness out of the 362... extends in 2/3 the way across the muffler, with about 1/2 of it cut out facing the front face of the muffler, so the exhaust has to go around to the front, then back to the exit, finished off with a spark arrestor nipple sans screen off a bg56 to limit db....20240824_110701.jpg

Got a couple of the new WCS 201t mufflers to play with today. When they came out I noticed they could be port matched just like the 200t so wanted to try it. There is no good way to open up the exhaust port on the 201 due to the stock muffler design.
Well...

Now to try it on the parts 201 coming this week :D
