661 didn't breathe free enough thru the picture window, so made a round holed screen lol
I forgot it'd been ported when I bought it. The gasket & muff opening from exhaust port were close. The inside had been gutted, but the muffler port was still about 5/8" dia round hole. Dremel opened that to the picture window opening.. Drill press time put about 20 5/32" holes around and it's a joy to operate since the PH broke in a bit over 3 years ago

The most recent muffler mod I have is a tree smacked one for the 661.

So far, this cover, along with the Mastermind opened up outlet through the back piece, has made the most power on the dyno.

I have more covers and back piece coming with different hole setups to try on the Dyno Mule.

*cough*5-series Huskies*cough* I kinda like the Stihls with the split muffs like the 026, 034, 044, 046, 066, etc..... Makes getting in them a lot easier.
Yes. They need to go back to the old style thick metal split halfs. I guess these new style baffles and paper thin mufflers are for emissions/saving weight?

Today I got a decibel meter. Figured I take readings for different sound levels for different muffler mods while it runs the dyno.

An extremely loud muffler defeats the purpose of having a muffler in the first place and possibly not getting any work in town due to possible noise complaints.

Also a restrictive muffler holds back too much of the saw’s potential for making good torque and power for some models. Especially the 661’s so far. 660’s will be tested later.

The 661’s respond very well to muffler mods, including moving the power band more towards 10,000 rpms instead of 9,000.

Today I had some loggers (the owners of this 661) come to my place to see the saw run the machine.

Both of them had their ears covered with their fingers. Both said that this muffler setup is very loud.....

Picture below is the 661 at idle with the above muffler.

This is wide open. The 661 has flatlined the gauge.

Below is me testing my powerful stereo system.
It maxed out at 111 dba but this got complaints coming in from neighbours, not from the saws.

My stereo shakes their house. My garage was all sealed up, but the neighbours still complain about the stereo.

I am a profound deaf person that wears a powerful hearing aid but the saw above at 130 dba is painful to the open ears.

I’m deaf in both ears but wear only one hearing aid. The hearing aid easily acts as a ear plug and limits the sounds going in.

Just a short spurt at wide open is enough to cause pain in the other ear. So even I must wear earmuffs.

How’d that do on the dyno compared with the muffler ?

I’ve not tried that yet. That was just idling. I was a bit worried that having nothing muffling the sound would be pretty nasty.

I did that once with a Chevy 350 on the engine stand years ago in my teenage years.

At WOT, two 16 inch flames coming out of the manifolds had my buddy and me sick to the stomach from the power pulses.

Unless that was the fumes, I’m not sure.

I’d probably try it anyway. For science for OPE :D

Yah right, that's just what you'll tell your pissed off neighbors. "It's for science 'n' stuffs!"
