Saw had PLENTY of power, and I used a round filed freshly sharpened. Everything sounded the same. Only when I timed the cuts did I notice that the 7 pin was just a tick faster. ‍♂️
I was very surprised.
And right there you have the reason why raw numbers off a page or a calculator don't always add up, they can only give reference points to where things should/could be based on a calculation.
Kinda like when the budget looks good at the beginning of the month, then you get to the end .

Just cuz you sharpened the chain don’t mean it’s right for the saw, sprocket, or wood.

Was this one right, this works great in the summer in hard dry ash, no problem getting a couple tanks out of it.
Didn't last but one cut in the same wood when frozen, the weakest of the cutters were damaged in random spots around the chain on both sides .

Well...Help me out here. What's necessary for chain to work better with 9 pin?
I was using 036 with 18" bar, 3/8 round file chain. I was just experimenting with 7 and 8 pin rims to see which was better. Trial and error. Lol

The wood I tested with did pretty much bury the 18" bar. It was dried Hard Red Oak.
Thank you sir.
Is that saw ported, I'm not thinking it would pull an 18" with an 8 pin in hard seasoned oak well with the rakers set the same as for a 7, rakers need to be tuned to the whole setup.
You gain chain speed and loose torque.

Oh YES. MOFO 036!

Chain was a tad aggressive.

That helps, but.
An aggressive chain will kill a 90cc saw.

Semi certainly has its place.
I use it a lot when working dirty wood because I'm not wanting to sharpen a chain every tank.
What chain is the right chain, it's the one that works in your conditions, we could advise one thing because we like it on our saws in our wood set up how we sharpen it, you're results will vary though.
If you notice that chain I pictured was fairly aggressive, it just won't hold up in a very hard piece of wood that is also frozen, one or the other just fine, but not both. That chain has the rakers set a little low as well and I'm sure that didn't help.
Heres an older video; stock 461 with a new stihl rs chain, the wood is a red oak root flare that was cut green and thrown into the woods, then it froze.
