I don't think a ported saw would handle .040 off the Key. Much more heat and compression.

I've went half a key on several. Some models are more forgiving on that than the others.

Nope this was a 3/8" .050 race chain, very aggressivly done.

I am wondering if deleting the base gasket would help this 044. Maybe @MustangMike you could weigh in on this as I saw you mentioned you did it to your 044, I think I'm going to leave this one the way it is as I think it's pretty well maxed as far as it can go without porting, I'm happy with the gains. How'd you guys like to see a comparison to a stock 046 with a duel port muff? 046 might have to pack a lunch...ill try and get a video of that soon but no promises. I'll use same chain and bar on both. I'll pay close attention to 044 to make sure it don't pop from the advance but it seemed to sound very crisp and clean, it does kick if you pull it over like a wuss, but not bad at all if you pull it over normal suprisingly.

On my 460 I think I had it around 8°. Not sure if you bumped it up more when you had it

what's .030 off key correspond in terms of degrees in advance?

I have only advanced one with a degree wheel one time and 5 degrees isn't much.
It varies from saw to saw how much one likes and what it's going to be used for also needs to be kept in mind,I advance a play/work 661 040 but a tree service saw I went 010.
A 372 I don't at all.

I tested it once with a 066 from 010 to 040
010 at a time and 030 was the strongest but it sounded strongest at 040 but it was actually slower than 020.

This was around .020 ish on mine. Hard to measure as my filing wasn't perfect flat. 7°

Mason, if the saw runs great, no need to change anything, but it you are considering it, check the squish first. Usually, deleting the gasket removes about .017.

My 044 ended up with .020 and my 440 .019 squish after the delete, so kinda perfect!

Deleting the gasket will give more compression, a longer power stroke, and open the intake sooner. But the degree timing of the ports may help some saws but not others. Like I said, if it runs great already, you may just want to leave it alone.

I cut a nail into that I guess was from a old tree stand because I'm in the middle of nowhere, knocked the hole left side off the chain on the 394.

That husky sounded NASTY
