OK. Thanks Dan. I will try an 8 pin .325 and my 18" 3/8 bar with 7 pin tomorrow. The 3/8 should load up more.
And I will take you up on the square chain.
Jeeesh. I thought the saw was cutting really well. Big chips, and clearing them fast. My saws are work saws, not race saws. ????

I'm going to set the above video up as my alarm clock.
And I'm gonna listen to it before I go to bed each night.

If my neighbors were Dan's neighbors I would just start the saw to sample sound and smell for a few mins each night...
Dan @paragonbuilder knows what I'm talking about... We're just a little bit crazy aren't we?

I think Dan was inferring to increase the gear to slow down chain speed to lower RPMs so it would cut in better rpm range.

Jeff the only saw of the ones Al had that we put on the dyno that day that are close to an 026 is his 024/026 combo saw.
Here's the graph -- best power seems to be between 10500 and 9000 RPM with 10000 about the sweet spot.
Best usable torque seems to be right at that 10000 area too. Not much power to be at north of 13000 on this graph -- all below 3HP to run your chain.
Goes right along with Dan's explanation.

Gotta add Dr. Carr's filter algorithm he gave me to my software and get crackin on more electronics to hand out to folks who want to build dynos. I should have more time this spring and summer! During winter work has killed me.

Increasing the gear increases chainspeed. Depending on how much it loads the saw it decreases ENGINE rpm in cut as it takes more power to pull bigger sprocket. I think 3/8 would prob cut better than .325 on that saw as it has power to pull it. Imo 16" 3/8 7 pin is what I'd run on it. 3/8 is tougher chain anyway. Just my opinion. My Jmssaws 394 wears a 8 pin all the time no matter if it's a 24" or 36" bar. It likes the extra chainspeed as it does not have the rpm of say a 346xp or 026, and it has plenty of power/torque to spare running 8 pin. I might try .404 at some time on it.

Jeff, ya got it a bit wrong. An 8 pin will slow the SAW by speeding the CHAIN.

Your saw is not "spec" so your chain should not be to "spec". Try dropping those rakers a little extra before you do anything else. Lower rakers = bigger chips and faster cut with slower engine speed (if all goes right).

325 is designed for a lower power engine than what you now have.

If you still need more, than go 8 pin.

(I was typing before H Boy posted)

His saw is making more power. Move it up 1k rpm, maybe more. Carb different also.

I changed the way I grind them now.

Jeff, for softer wood, drag a file across the rakers. You can stay with a 7 pin 325

If Jeff has his 026 at the NY GTG there may be opportunity to run it on the original motorcycle brake dyno. I'm hoping to bring the dyno + electronics to the NY GTG for some show and tell or whatever. Really bummed I haven't had more time to play with it.
