I hate black locust, can't keep it under control here. Thorns everywhere that will punch through about anything including boot soles. Not to mention hard as a rock, it will kill a chisel chain in no time. Flip side is it burns great if you wanna deal with all that.

We have honey and black locust
The black locust is invasive and covered with giant thorns that are very hard on tractor tires.

I thought it was Honey that had the thorns, and my net search (Wikopedia) revealed:

"Honey locusts commonly have thorns 3–10 cm (11⁄4–4 in) long growing out of the branches, some reaching lengths over 20 cm (8 in);"

I know in Colonial days they sometimes used the thorns as nails! Black Locust is most resistant to rot of any North American tree, and was used as early foundations and in ship building.

The Indians had transplanted it and cultivated it, and we took advantage of the results.

Most of the old farms around here still have locust fence posts that have been there for generations.

It would also appear you are correct on Honey locust being the one with thorns. People around here have been calling black locust for years. Learn something new everyday.

That is a common misconception in this area as well, everybody calls the thorny ones Black Locust. Also, we have some of the Honey Locust that are thornless, they make the most beutiful honey-colored lumber without having to deal with thorns, and great firewood also.

There's actually small birds of prey that use the thorns of honey locust to impale there prey and use it to hold it in place while they rip it apart.
I know if you get poked by a thorn you best get it cleaned out or it will get infected. Stays sore for a long time too.

How about this wood? I cut a 175 ft stick of this.
It has stringy bark, very tough to split, as it grabs hold of the Ax, as smells bad. Kind of on the softer side. Very wet and moist.

First cuts 064 fastback junker I just got today with a toasted piston. Dropped on the cross/mmws 066 kit I had on the shelf and gave it a run. Stock untouched muffler, stock timing, crappy stihl safety chain in half frozen oak tuned pretty rich @13k.
