My brother in law had my first year 046 borrowed for a year or so until he called me and said that it wasn't running right and making a racket so he brings it out and gets another one of my 460's and leaves,I find both crank bearings about as bad as any I've seen so I go to pull the cylinder which is a good running cylinder to build another hybrid and find this.
This saw ran mind you.

Every once in a while I can build a 066 to whip a stout 395.
I got Shaun's sitting here in the shop now.
It runs good.
I'll take a 394 over a 95 for all out power.

I don't know what caused it.

Both bearings are terrible so I thought it was bumping but the piston is perfect and wasn't hitting the chamber.

It's 200lb of compression but I don't think that did it. Had to be loose cylinder bolts maybe? Anybody else seen a 046 do this?

cant believe that puppy was still running
Stihl needs an early warning system to prevent failures like Husqvarna has.
After the first 6-8 tanks of fuel the Husqvarna fasteners start falling out so you know it is time for a rebuild.
These dang Stihls just run forever even with problems

Yep, several of 'em. Best to just cut minimal from base, and have to go gasketless. I've had a 066 do it also, running to much compression, with a gasket.

There were a bunch a few years ago breaking bases. Husky 390s did it as well for a couple years. I think last year 461s had a few that did.

I had a 390 do it but not like this one
It's broke off above the lower.

It's probably got 030 or 040 off the base
D chamber so it don't take much to make 200lb

It ran for a few months

First stihl I've seen do it

I think yes, but only if they have a HD2 filter, combined with a DP muffy cover.

They were tight when I pulled the cylinder.
I've seen some Crack at the flange but never this high up.

It still ran pretty good just idled to fast

2165 in a chunk of petrified White Oak crotch, off the roll chinese chain. Has a unmodified carb, airfilter, and timing. Unlimited coil, conservative tune.
