I was using my Smittybilt 046 to mill the Shag Bark Hickory. My friend John (who was at the GTG) wanted to try it with his 290. Did about 2 or 3 inches and gave up. Part of why he went to the GTG, although his friend has a 661 that seems to mill very well.

460, not 461. Not really. I couldn't apply pressure cuz you can't use the dogs. Both saws were screaming. The chains are sharp and self feed great while bucking. But just seemed to be skating over this wood. It may have been just super hard. I'll play with it some more. Maybe lower rakers will help.
Got ya in the other thread. Thanks Dan.

Maybe 1cc smaller
Stroke is shorter on the 661 but the bore is bigger.
I know the bore and stroke difference. It just appears to have a smaller muffler than the 660 and more than 1cc to my eye. It seems like more of a difference in sound beetween the 660 and 661 versus the sound difference between the 064 and 066/660...which are almost identical.

Lower rakers will help. More aggressive underside angles help as.well.

Dan, I have both a Beam Machine, and a Logosol Timberjig. Made the posts & beams (6.5" X 6.5") with the Beam Machine, and the Oak & Hickory boards with the Timberjig.

I believe he uses square. Did you like the square conversion I did for you?

A 661 is about 1cc smaller.
My very first post has that in it.
The other post you found confusing was a reply to your comment on how different they sound.

A 660 is 92.7cc I believe and a 661 is 91 something.
I hope I answered the question good enough.

J there was nothing confusing about what it sounds like to me, hence the muffler question and the muffler question only.
I already know it is basically 1cc smaller in engine design and you led me off when you included all that engine spec info which was irrelevant to the question.

I know people are here to learn and share info but talking to experienced members like they are greenhorns is what I'm having the problem with.
If you already knew then why ask,not once but twice.

I was trying to explain why they sound different, they do because there completely different saws.

If you think I was being disrespectful in any way your wrong.
It was a general response to a general question.
