Wow. They both run great by the look of it.
Yup I agree, my ported 70cc saws might be a tad ahead of the 500i... BUT that’s what makes the 500i so impressive for a stock saw giving ported 70cc saws a good run for there money with just a muffler mod. I honestly think it would be a waste of money port a 500i... though it would be cool to see what it offers. It’s already offering ported saw performance, uses as much fuel as a ported saw and it costs as much as a ported saw (ported 462 cost: 1400$... 500i + free muffler mod cost:1300$). It’s basically a factory hi performance saw with a factory warranty. The cost seems high but when you factor in the stock performance and the cost of the fuel injection tech it kind of makes sense. I doubt stihl is making much profit off what they charge for it honestly.

Why not compare it to your 7900? If you still have it of course…seems more of an apples to apples comparison imo

Good point, if I had a stock one with a muffler mod it would make a great test. Mine is ported though unfortunately. Not really fair. I can still try it out though, gives me an excuse to blow the dust off it. Haven't ran it since last fall.

What is fair in the world of ported saws lol. Would be interesting to see how it runs against a ported saw of the same displacement just for gits and shiggles. Stock I feel the 500i would stomp anything in 75-87cc class. But stock is silly soooooo

The old 7900 runs right with the 500i, the 7900 was the 70cc to 80cc king for nearly 20 years IMHO.

Great video! Stock power definitely varies widely among the half dozen or so different 64/73/7900 versions. But those original 7900’s are definitely the better runners out of the box than the later ones imo.

It has .018" squish and 190psi right out of the box! I was going to port it and decided not to. A lot if them were like that at the time, beautiful cylinder casting and machining.

Unfortunately the log has been changing as I’ve cut closer to the butt swell. Im sure the chain has dulled a tad after 12 cuts as well. As evidenced by the increasing cut times with the last couple saws. But I decided anyway to run the 7310 against the 7900. I want to run the 500i with a 32” bar in the next test against my 064, I will include the 7900 in it.
