The solo, which is basically a Dolmar has definitely got my interest in them. Seems like a well put together saw too

I have a theory along these lines, I believe that the D jug was only fitted to early 046s at the factory. But, when production was first getting ramped up a bunch of cylinders would have been put into the warehouse network for warranty claims. It can take a long time to go through all of that stock, maybe the cylinder was replaced under warranty for some reason and the warehouse still had some D jugs on the shelf?

How would you know? Especially if it's been 20 years or so since the top end got replaced

Don't take much to make compression on those.

I get the same outcome with either cylinder but I guess the d is less work.
