I have a Stihl HOS and a 511A.
When I bought the HOS I thought it was a USG....found out what it was when I got it out of the box...and tried to set the head angle..(doh !!)
truth be told, my 511a has a CBN wheel on it and the HOS has a "stihl" wheel and the HOS sharpened chain will out cut the CBN on the 511a at the same angle.
don't know why.

Looks like that chain was cuttin pretty good. Nice job. :applaudit: Now that you've used the grinder and had some pretty good success you'll find yourself playing with the angles looking for even more gains in cutting performance. I find it very addictive....and fun.
The next step for me is trying to get this square filing figured out:hollering:

Think I got it figured out.

105 drivers 3/8 .050 chisel.

Gonna like this lil unit.

That's where I grind mine too, wish I could find the magic grind that wouldn't dull when I hit the dirt.......dam it anyway. Some people say the tilt doesn't help much, but I've found it to help with my sharpenings. I just have a $100 timber tuff grinder

Thanks guys,

I still need to find a dedicated spot for the grinder. Pretty happy with the first chain. Seems to cut as well as anything I have used out of the box.

Now for the grinder. Seems the vice was centered nice, didn't have to adjust from right to left, the built in led are nice to see what you are doing. Going to use the pink oregon wheel, don't see a need for the cbn yet.

A lot of guys including myself bolt there grinders to a piece of 2x4. This way you can clamp it in a vise and use it when needed. I find this very helpful especially since bench and floor space can sometimes be hard to get.

This one has the holes to mount to the wall, think I may do that. Just high enough to pull up a chair. :) this is going to come in handy for the long chains, that always find the dirt/debris.

The head angle on the Oregon and Stihl are different.
40° on a Stihl is 52° on an Oregon.

Anybody have a pic of a cutter free from the grinder? The way I have it set now leaves quite a "beak" on the corner.

Might want to fold in hard wood??. Seems to be the ticket for soft though.

I got a real nice amount of pink wheels that I wont be needing, Oregon too IIRC, you'd be doing me a favor by freeing up some space if you want them Sir

Looks about the same as my round ground chains. Like moparmyway said you can play with the DG heights depending on hard or soft wood. This is all part of the "fine tuning" a chain to your liking

This is the "beak" point I was wondering about.

You are running the wheel in pretty deep, that creates more hook. The wheel should fit the cutter in the same manner as a file, i.e. 20% of the radius should be above the top plate. You don't want to be grinding with the side of the wheel.

After the gullet fills, you can take that out by going deeper, but not hitting the top plate and working corner.

I agree a well filed chain can be superior to a ground chain.

For me, I can only get to the wood when the crops are off (winter months).

Cut about 10 cord a year, normally play with saws while I'm out cutting. 4/6 saws at a time, most come back dull/rocked.

Might be 3 days or 3 weeks before I cut again, hate spending hours mounting and filing chains before I can cut wood.

I can file enough to get me through the day, but having to file 1000 dl at a time, wouldn't be able to hold the saw to get wood lol
