Buy a second cover from Stihl and modify one, that is way cheaper than a bark box

I thought about it but one nice thing is it’s set back away from the stump unlike the stock cover.

I’ve been looking at these just for the sexiness factor. I like their felling spikes and have them on 2 saws now. Getting an 064 built and may add this cover on there just because, it will get a cannon duralite bar as well so might as well keep the bling rolling.

@Skeans1 how does that 500i compare to older models you’ve ran line a 460, 461, even a 064 or 660? I’m sure you’ve ran them all, curious on your thoughts how it fits it’s role among “the greats”?

This is my first Stihl we’ve had in 30 years, the last one we had was a 064 which stuck around for all about a year we normally run Husky 390’s and 395’s. That said it feels a little lighter then a 372xpw and the power of the 385/390’s it’s comfortable nimble and light great for falling all day with mixed in limbing and bucking.

For $75 I was skeptical. So I made my own from an old stainless breaker box that I found in the trash at work.

Not sure if it's even close to the real thing as far as the size goes. It's extremely loud. Definitely not hearing safe. I did buy their air filter for the 462 and a set of their dogs. Both of which I like. The saw does feel stronger now. Seem to be able to lean on it a bit more. I think the biggest gain came from the air filter. Removed the plastic piece that holds the factory filter and chopped the heck out of the top cover.

20210108_123714.jpg 20210122_215956.jpg The inlet on the cover I made 3/4"x 1" and spotted a piece of screen over it. Outlet is 1"x probably 1-1/4"
Factory hole is still open as well.

He essentially just defeated the air injection on the 462. And that front cover look to be a bit too big. He may lose some with that. Would be cool to see some before and after cuts to get a gauge on those mods.

Except that the air injection is still injecting air into the carb box.

Stopping the air from going into the carb box will allow that air to cool the cylinder more efficiently, then the air injection system would be defeated

good point: Better filtration Vs Cleaner "air" Vs beat up bottom ends

...

quick answer .. Yes...the Husky engineering dept has not, as of yet, secured a method of proper tension application whereby a screw or bolt might be made to successfully retain thread tension requirements to hold that *s-word on

I'm dying. That was funny AF.

On side note I took off my 500i muffler and I'm like 70% sure they cross threaded one of the the bolts. Cause taking it out was a PIA. But at least we knew it wasn't gonna come out on its own.
German torque spec. *Gudantight*

Edit: I ended buying one of these since there's like no room on the side off muffler to do a port.

I did like the looks of it since his welds are clean.

I could have tig welded one up and copied. But the only stainless I have on hand atm was coupons and a small sheet of 316 which I wasn't gonna waste on a muffler.

Side note they do have a spark arrestor and they aren't much louder than stock. I feel like the oem 660 style dual ports are way louder in comparison.

Outside a normal muffler mod these aren't anything fancy besides the fact they are/have/and stainless, spark arrestor, don't stick out beyond a saw.

People out there who don't have a clue are over hyping what it's simple job is.

And I feel like $75ish isn't something to scoff at.

I like it! And a good use of scrap metal. Start selling them to suckers who can't part with money fast enough!

question. was it cross threaded ? reason i ask is i think Stihl is using some new sort of thread retention super goop that really holds like a sumbish. quite a few times ive felt the same thing and only to find out there was a super loctite type goop that held tension almost entirely until the bolt was out. some of the newer stihl retentioners are "one time" use and are clearly "lighter" and i have snapped a few ( im calabrese -which in Italian means stubborn) as well.

That's the other 30%.
15% it's got some kind of grey thread locker (But why is it just on one bolt)
15% did they ram some part of the muffler gasket into the threads?

Also IDK if this is normal but why was there a washer on it while the other side doesn't have it.

A. Did they forget another washer.
B. Is it a way to tell if a customer takes off the muffler cover and puts it back on wrong side.
C. Did they use it to keep the threads from bottoming out and stripping, if they did in fact cross threaded it.

It's still tight going in and coming out. I've probably undone and redone the bolt 5 times and is still feels the same.
