I got a box in the mail yesterday that contained a really nice condition Poulan 3450. Its for a buddy at work and I would like to give it a tuning checkout before I pass it along to him. When I fired it up it oiled great and ran fine, but it wanted the carburetor screws out 2+ turns from seated before it was happy. This concerned me that there might be an air leak hiding somewhere. Could somebody that knows their way around these saws let me know if this is where they should be? From the casting dates on a couple of parts, it is about a 1998 vintage saw with no chain brake and no limiter caps. Also, what should it tach out to?

I don't know my way around these saws but I'm pretty sure the condition of the carburetor gaskets and diaphragms will change where the saw is happy. Sometimes if they are old they flex and change fuel mixture.

I did find one thread from several years ago on another site that casually mentioned 2+ turns as the base setting for the HDA 164.
