Was it necessary to remove that much for clearance?

In the interest of full disclosure, the The 3400 was 56cc, 3700 61cc, 3800 61cc and 4000 65cc within this saw family. I would rather had made full circle crank cause it would have been less work but crankcase volume trumped that decision.
I was thinking call it a 4000S. "S" being for Stroker, Sleeper, Stupid, Shrapnel, Scrap iron...

Would that be done the same way as combustion chamber volume or cyclinder heads for a car? and would you have the crank and rod in there too?
