IMO, transfers are the most "confusing" port.

So, for those of us who like to tinker, but do not have all the fancy tools, what is your take on Bridge Ports?

IMO, they can increase flow a bit, and more importantly, direct it where it belongs.

I personally haven’t seen much benefit from them. Imo a well done transfer port doesn’t need them. Of course there is always an exception

I won't dispute that at all Mike, but my question was, if you don't have the fancy tools to do the transfers correctly, can bridge ports be a substitute?

Not talking about changing timing Kenny, just the direction of the transfer flow. I believe bridge ports can make a positive difference.

Maybe bridge ports could help a lazier or poorly aimed transfer work better if I am understanding it right? But couldn’t that be changed or achieved with the right blowdown?

This is just my opinion (and I could very well be wrong) but in my mind, if bridge ports help, your transfer tunnels don’t have enough area

A Bridge port will not change the port timing or blowdown.

It provides additional volume to the transfer flow, and directs that additional volume above the intake port, where it is most efficient at clearing the spent exhaust from the combustion chamber.

The "new" trend seems to be not to use them, but several builders did use them in the past, and a lot of those saws ran quite well.

I was posting as you were posting Kevin. I don't disagree with you, but I don't have a right angle grinder, and getting into the transfer ports is not easy.

I see the Bridge ports as an alternative, especially on poorly ported AM cylinders, but they seem to work effectively on some OEM cylinders also.

The real problem is most of the 660 cylinders (especially AM) having 25-30° of blowdown when they run pretty good with 20. It’s why the early 066 and 046 ran so well having 17-19

So bridge ports are compensating for having too much BD, poor direction or too little transfer area? Which one?

It was aready trashed so no harm done.
When u got into the ports they were worse than expected. Not machined 20210601_140036.jpg 20210601_135731.jpg 20210601_135725.jpg 20210601_135713.jpg 20210601_135700.jpg yet.
This one might have been trimmed a bit on the bottom to set up a base plate. It looks that way to me from seeing it again today. Whole pile of jugs in a box on that bench.
