Looks great Johnny. I wonder what it is about the design that makes it so easy to get the IH exhaust floor. Was the same on the ones I’ve done. Refractive error from the Twisted port?Worlds first fully gutted strato?View attachment 243490View attachment 243491View attachment 243492View attachment 243493
What does IH mean here? (Not IronHorse, I suppose.)I wonder what it is about the design that makes it so easy to get the IH exhaust floor.
That would definitely play tricks on your eyes while grinding.Looks great Johnny. I wonder what it is about the design that makes it so easy to get the IH exhaust floor. Was the same on the ones I’ve done. Refractive error from the Twisted port?
Mine was far worse than yours.

My guess is for soundI still don't get the off axis exhaust port on the 462.
I dont see why they did it or an advantage to it but obviously there must be.
I LOVE my 462 stock and doubt I will bother changing it.
But still....... WHY?
For stock saws, 462 sounds like husky to me.My guess is for sound
Let me guess...Last year I was brought a 395 that had been built as a race saw. Owner said it didn't run right.
This is what I found.

Odd you say that, it reminds me a lot of a 372, even how it comes apart reminds me of a husky, spring AV, and air injection too. Stihl sure has made a nice updated 372.lol. I love mine.For stock saws, 462 sounds like husky to me.

Would have been nice if Stihl would have advertised the benefits instead of their usual keep it a secret tactic. Whatever it may be, one would think the benefit would be a selling point.
You're right in thinking that there is a reason and an advantage. It doesn't make any sense to just twist the exhaust port until you look at the muffler that attaches to it. We see what most would call a baffle that has been elongated going from corner to corner. I believe this is indeed not a baffle, more like a diverter or a type of spreader instead. There is more area to the diverter or spreader than the exhaust port there for it would be kinda hard for it to baffle anything. I believe the exhaust peels around the lip of the thing and goes into the entire can at once, instead of splatting on the end of the can.
So, it's down to sound, power or both. When I ported the 462 I left the diverter/spreader thing intact in the muffler and enlarged the opening and the port to match it. That saw was definitely impressive to say the least, but all that could possibly be said is that maybe it didn't hurt performance any. While my gut instinct tells me otherwise.
Maybe somebody with a bunch of tools, a chainsaw dyno and possibly a db meter could debunk this whole thing in short order.
@Red97 Know anybody like that?
I get a little excited sometimes.Looks like you got 5 tenths greedy on the dial....
