Sometimes it could be guess work .For example on the Partner p-100 if you use Husqvarna 2100 plates a Husky bar will work .

Just as general info I've noticed slight differences between the 500 and the 5000 .The 5000 being a pro rated saw has the side brace much like the P100 super design plus a metal clutch cover /brake and additional bracing for the muffler .The 500 used plastic with no bracing .That's all I've found so far .Weather there is a difference in the basic engine I'm not certain .

As the saga continues I'm sailing into uncharted waters .Glad I have a service manual .Mac and Stihl I've done many but Partner,Husqvarna etc not so much .The oiler on the 5000 plus isn't working .I'm going to do the kerosene flush first .If that doesn't get it I'll need to delve into it deeper .Unlike most designs from what I see the oil pick up is via a screen on the pump intake ,rigid not flexable .The good thing is the case doesn't need split because it should be accessable by removing the pump cover .I think the pump itself is kind of like the p-100 internal gear drive from the crank shaft .You never know on older saws how long they have sat idle .The oil could have "waxed " up .The good thing is the engine purrs like a kitten ,easy start sounds great .BTW the bar mount is the same as a 10 series McCulloch .Fact I found a new .325 Mac bar in .050 not that damned .058 many Swedish saws use .

Now then the 500 is a horse of a different color so to speak, got spark but no putt putt, not even a fart with a prime .I now wonder if the flywheel spun throwing the timing off .It's rare but it does happen .

More of the saga .I took the oil pump off ,blew everything out .I suspect for some reason the shaft might have been bound ,Polished it up with 15 micon lapping paper .If it was bound it could still rotate but could not recriprocate which would greatly reduce it's output .Lady fair has been under the weather but as soon as she awakens I'll give it a go .I did some muffler work on the 5000 plus and it is kind of loud mouth, like make dogs howl .

I cobbled together a chain ,66 drivers .I had to peen that one as I didn't have a .325 anvil for my spinner .I think it puts out enough oil but using a 10 series McCulloch bar the oil hole and the tightning hole go completly through the bar leaving an escape route other than on the bar .I'll make a gasket from a beverage can tommorrow .It didn't do badly until the chain went dry .
I'm used to McCulloch and Stihl oilers that really put out the oil this one does not which surprises me being made early to mid mid 80's

Show and tell .This is what I was talking about mentioning "gasket " .Worked some but I'm going to have to investigate this thing.still not enough oil .One more try and then change it out to the pump from the 500 .SOB is driving me crazy .So far all I've gotten out of this deal is I've became an expert at removing clutchs on little Partners .I did test it on a 24" round of red oak with 16" of bar buried,.It's got the power but as soon as it runs the chain dry about like tossing out an anchor .

Patience is required by many vintage chainsaws, some simply too much ;-)

I'm about to take it apart again .If I figure it out, good .If not I'll change the pump from the 500 .If that doesn't get it I'll presurize the oil tank .One way or another it will get oil .

I have never repaired the oil pump, in chainsaws that have been unused for a long time, thin oil fillers before repair would even penetrate and do the job for me

The soap opera continues .The oil pump on the 500 didn't work either for some reason .I've got the oiler for a J-Red 490 or 590 in transite .Mean time it's time to cool my jets before I get medevil with that SOB .I've got a couple battery golf carts to tinker with anyway .I've never had a chainsaw make a monkey out of me and this little thing will not be the first .

I'm going to have to look at an old Lombard I have that uses a pressurised oil tank type oiler if it comes to that .Some bike saw hottys they use a tap off the exhaust but they only run a few seconds .I'm pretty sure the Lombard uses impulse from the crankcase so it must have a check valve some place for that to work .

Similar situation, I have a 490 that won't oil, I went through it and through it, swapped pumps and still can't find anything obviously amiss.
Finally shelved it for another time because I have too many hammers and axes in close proximity.

The big difference between 500 and 5000 is open port vs closed port cylinders.

I've only worked on one J-red that I think was a 490 and it impressed me .Fact so far it's the only J-Red I've ever seen .Partner at one time were said to be the best concrete saws but very few chainsaws were ever sold in this area and no J-Reds I can remember .

I may have found a remedy thanks to Magnus .The cover on the pump applies pressure on the rubber intake and out flow .Over a period of years the rubber loses some of it's elasticity .By doing that it loses suction .Some have reshaped the metal cover so it applies more pressure on those rubber pieces making it draw more of a suction .Makes sense to me especially on a 40 year old saw .I'll try it in a day or so .I'd have never thought of that before ,duh .

Finally after much perseverance and help from Magnus' forum I got that miserable SOB .It oils not but not like an old Stihl or McCulloch .A thin washer under the cover right on top of the rubber portion center of the pump shaft .Gave it a test run on a 20 inch chunk of rock hard white oak ..It compressed it enough to get a good suction .This one certainly lived up to it's reputation ,for 3 cuber it's got enough stock

That depends, the same carb is listed for both saws. If a carb was pulled from the p55 installed on the P70 and not properly retuned, could possibly cause an issue. Likely to have additional contributing factors.

I got the pump from a J-Red 490 from E-Bay .Looks fine .Now since I've figured it out it will become a spare .You never know what you might come across .Now I have to figure out whats wrong with the 500 Partner .
