Pretty smooth. Full comp LGX, 93 drivers, 3/8 50 squared.

Bottom side, meh.

I get that tareout myself on hardwoods and soft. Look at your grain angle there. It seems the rift sawn wood is ok but as you move to the flat sawn in that area, oaks especially cause of the rays, tareout.
Do you see it with beach or sycamore with the chain top plate angle your using?

Nice job Jason. Beautuful wood. Maybe try a milling/ripping chain for comparison?
They are expensive and from what I’m told, much slower. I’d like to see someone share pics of the finish from them. In my feeble mind, if you plan to use your csm’d wood, it’s going to get put through a planer or at the least sanded. I’m not looking for almost perfect off the mill. I want quick so I can get the job done faster. It’s damn hard work, last thing I want to do is slow it down. This isn’t a precision tool.

Haven’t been into any of those. Just ash, maple, apple, oak and walnut.

Maple, ash, apple and walnuts seem to be ok. Oak and cedars do the worst. White oak does that with very little fibers lifted. It looks like velvet in that cross grain area. Yellow pine shows it less than white... just like the oaks, odd.

Does western redwood do this?
Shout out to the left coast.

Here is the Ash log I milled with the Oregon ripping chain. Finish was better than I expected. Awesome work on some beautiful wood J!

Looks good Dan! Does that chain have the scratchers and cutters or is it just full chisel filed to 10 degrees?

Good question. Any more pics Dan?

I did not try scratcher chain yet. Full comp gives a smoother edge than skip in my experience.

Going to try full comp zero again with more power this time for a rustic finish on post, beam and shelves. I get the feeling siding will still need to pass through something to be surfaced on one side.

Cool thread on oak. I have some ready now and plenty more to cut.

Anyone have a good idea on what to do with white oak flitches from six foot long logs about twenty inches wide? Will be cutting fourteen inch cants from them for cribbing.

Milled some ash for fun today. Dunno what I’ll do with it yet. I was curious to see what the pattern would be in this crotch piece. 8CCC1E1C-E03F-41AF-8CD9-DA0A866D3B1A.jpegFAE53A08-40F4-4025-81DC-27013477131B.jpeg 1678E0EA-F124-444F-89C7-7F22180653CC.jpegA17257CD-BA75-4E28-AF63-18389412D3A2.jpeg Modded 572 xp with a 32” semi skip setup. Saw pulled it pretty good for 70cc’s. Wide powerband. Surprised me.

Hey J sorry I didnt get a notification from this thread. It does have two different style cutters on it. I'll post some pics of it when I get home late tonight. That was the first log I milled and I was very please with the finish and speed of cutting. I have a boat load of oak to mill so I'll try the square semi skip I have on it.

Here is a Carlton ripping chain. The three I have all look the same.

So I’m seeing semichisel filed at 10 degrees? Semi skip? Can’t see why they’d charge more as a dedicated “ripping” chain if so.

I’ve milled with full chisel filed at 10 but it was always full skip because my shortest mill bar was 37”. I’d imagine semi to be a bit slower cutting but hold the edge a bit longer. My curiosity lies in the Granberg ripping chain with the scorers.

We should sometime compare your chain right beside square to note the difference in speed. If you’ve never milled with it, you may become a convert, especially considering you have a grinder now.

Ya for now I'll stick with the ripping chains that I have. Much easier to sharpen in the field. I will make a square and try it out down the road. The scoring cutters have half the tooth ground off and may be ground at 0°.

White oak felled about a year ago, sealed the ends and she’s been sittin. Ran 404 full skip with a 50” setup on a 48” Granburg. Peeled the bark and got started.

Got 3 full cuts before the chain needed a new edge on its cutters. Put it on the Simington setup for my work chains .... with the little incline, she practically pulled herself through. The 3120 muffler mod and throttle lock kept all the other saws hanging, and me breathing oxygen instead of exhaust . You just can’t beat the 3120 for milling with a chainsaw
